Set to hit free agency
Bortles didn't see game action for the Rams during the 2020 campaign, and he's set to hit free agency during the offseason.
Analysis: The third overall selection in the 2014 NFL Draft is unlikely to re-sign with Los Angeles after spending the past two seasons with the franchise. There's potential for Bortles to latch on with another team and even see the field in 2021, but he also likely has a long road ahead before warranting fantasy attention, even in the deepest of formats.

Officially signs with Rams
The Rams signed Bortles off the Broncos' practice squad Tuesday.
Analysis: With Jared Goff (thumb) ruled out for the season finale against the Cardinals, Bortles will return to Los Angeles to serve as John Wolford's backup. Bortles spent the entirety of the 2019 season with the Rams, so he has enough familiarity with the system to be ready if called upon. Meanwhile, Wolford -- who entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2018 -- will make his NFL debut Sunday.

Potential return to Rams
Bortles is being targeted as a possible backup for the Rams this weekend according to head coach Sean McVay, Eric D. Williams of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Bortles spent time with the Broncos earlier this season, bouncing between the active roster and practice squad for several weeks. Now with Jared Goff (thumb) ruled out, the Rams may look to bring in the veteran, who spent the 2019 campaign in Los Angeles. Currently, the only other quarterback on the Rams' active roster is John Wolford.

Passes COVID-19 protocols
Bortles was restored from the practice squad COVID-19 list Tuesday, Aric DiLalla of the Broncos' official site reports.
Analysis: Drew Lock and Brett Rypien also were activated from the list. Bortles continues to reside on the practice squad. He has a slim chance of handling any meaningful snaps with the Broncos behind Lock, Rypien and Jeff Driskel (illness) on the organizational depth chart.

On practice squad COVID list
Bortles was placed on the practice squad COVID-19 list Saturday, Jeff Legwold of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Bortles was a high-risk close contact with an infected person, likely teammate Jeff Driskel, who tested positive this week for COVID-19. Drew Lock and Brett Rypien have also been deemed close contacts and have been placed on the same reserve/COVID-19 list. None of those quarterbacks will be available for Sunday's game versus the Saints, so Kendall Hinton will start under center.

Lands on practice squad
The Broncos signed Bortles to the practice squad Monday, Troy Renck of Denver 7 News reports.
Analysis: Bortles was released by the Broncos on Saturday, but he'll stick around as a scout team quarterback. The Broncos will push forward with Drew Lock as their starting quarterback, Brett Rypien as the backup and Jeff Driskel as the No. 3 option. If any of the three get hurt, Bortles likely will get called up again.

Cut by Broncos
The Broncos released Bortles on Saturday, Ryan O'Halloran of The Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Bortles was brought in for insurance under center when Drew Lock went down with a shoulder injury, but Bortles ended up receiving two healthy scratches during his time on the roster. Now, with Lock trending toward a return Sunday, the Broncos have unsurprisingly opted to part ways. As a result, the former Jaguar will have to look for a new opportunity.

Inactive for TNF
Bortles (coach's decision) is inactive for Thursday's game against the Jets, Aric DiLalla of the Broncos' official site reports.
Analysis: Bortles is a healthy scratch for the second straight week, as it doesn't seem he's yet managed to acclimate to Denver's offensive scheme. The Broncos will roll with Brett Rypien under center to begin Thursday's contest, with Jeff Driskel available as the backup.

Not in starter conversation
Coach Vic Fangio said Monday that Bortles won't start in Thursday's game versus the Jets, Zac Stevens of TheDNVR.com reports.
Analysis: Fangio relayed that since Bortles only has two practices with the team, it's not realistic for him to start so soon. As a result, either Jeff Driskel or Brett Rypien will be under center to start Thursday's game. If one or both falters, however, Bortles could enter the competition ahead of Week 5's matchup against the Patriots.

Healthy scratch Week 3
Bortles (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's Week 3 tilt against the Buccaneers.
Analysis: The veteran just signed Tuesday after Drew Lock suffered a Week 2 shoulder injury that's projected to keep him out several games. However, with only three practice sessions in coordinator Pat Shurmur's offense under his belt, Bortles isn't yet ready to serve as interim starter Jeff Driskel's primary backup, a role that will be filled by Brett Rypien in Week 3.

Unlikely to play Week 3
Broncos head coach Vic Fangio said Thursday that he doesn't expect Bortles to back up new starting quarterback Jeff Driskel in Sunday's game against the Buccaneers, Nick Kosmider of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Bortles signed with the Broncos on Tuesday, two days after starter Drew Lock exited the team's loss to the Steelers with a shoulder injury that's expected to keep him sidelined for multiple weeks. Driskel will step in as the starter in the interim, with Bortles providing with an experienced option behind him. However, because Bortles didn't arrive in Denver until Thursday and needs time to get up to speed with a new playbook, he'll likely serve as an emergency No. 3 option at quarterback…read more

Reaches deal with Denver
Bortles agreed Tuesday with the Broncos on a one-year contract, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Since hitting the free-agent market this spring after a season of backup duty with the Rams, Bortles received offers from several teams to join their practice squads, but he preferred to hold out for an opportunity that presented a clearer path to getting on the field. He ultimately found a desirable situation with the Broncos, who were in the market for a veteran signal-caller after second-year quarterback Drew Lock suffered a shoulder injury in Denver's Week 2 loss to Pittsburgh. While the…read more

Checking in with Denver
Bortles is scheduled to visit with the Broncos on Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Denver previously kicked the tires on Bortles last offseason, but he ultimately signed with the Rams and served as the team's backup quarterback behind Jared Goff throughout the 2019 season. Bortles didn't draw much interest after becoming a free agent again this spring, but with injuries at the quarterback position around the league already beginning to mount, the 28-year-old now has a decent chance of resurfacing with a team. Denver's top signal-caller, Drew Lock, is expected to miss 3-to-5…read more

Seems minimal time in 2019
Bortles completed one of two passes for three yards and rushed twice for minus-9 yards while appearing in three games during the 2019 season.
Analysis: The 27-year-old signed a one-year, $1 million deal with the Rams in the spring knowing that he would be in line for a backup job behind Jared Goff, and Bortles stayed in that role all season since Goff didn't miss a game. Bortles is set to hit free agency again in March and essentially finds himself in the same position as he was after being let go by the Jaguars last year. He shouldn't have a problem securing a contract for the 2020 campaign, but he's unlikely to be viewed as much more than a…read more

Tosses two passes in blowout win
Bortles completed one of his two pass attempts for three yards during Sunday's 34-7 win over Arizona. He played seven snaps in relief of starting quarterback Jared Goff once the game was out of reach for the Cardinals.
Analysis: While this was the third time Bortles has seen the field this season, Sunday's two throws were his first of the campaign. He's locked into a backup role, and as long as Goff is healthy, Bortles is nothing more than a speculative stash in two-quarterback settings.
