Three snaps versus Miami
Montgomery was on the field for three of 74 snaps on offense in Sunday's 24-17 loss to the Dolphins, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Montgomery, who continues to work behind Rhamondre Stevenson (54 snaps) and Ezekiel Elliott (22 snaps), didn't record a carry or catch (on one target) Sunday and will remain off the fantasy radar as long as his change-of-pace role with the Patriots is limited.

Catches two passes in Week 1
Montgomery logged seven of a possible 80 snaps on offense in Sunday's season-opening 25-20 loss to the Eagles, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Montgomery, who was brought back to the team's 53-man roster Saturday, worked behind Rhamondre Stevenson (58 snaps) and Ezekiel Elliott (28 snaps) Sunday en route to carrying once for seven yards and catching two of his three targets for nine yards. There could be weeks where the versatile Montgomery is more involved in the Patriots' passing game, but for now he's off the fantasy radar as long as the team's top duo is available.

Joins 53-man roster
New England signed Montgomery to its active roster Saturday, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: The veteran running back was waived and added to the Patriots' practice squad this offseason before signing to the team's active roster. Montgomery will join Rhamondre Stevenson and Ezekiel Elliott in New England's backfield ahead of the coming season.

Joins Pats practice squad
The Patriots signed Montgomery to their practice squad Wednesday.
Analysis: New England will also retain fellow running back Kevin Harris on the practice squad, with he and Montgomery providing the organization with some familiar depth behind Rhamondre Stevenson and Ezekiel Elliott. Montgomery has a chance to enter the Patriots' change-of-pace mix this coming season in the event that he's promoted to the active roster, a plausible outcome unless further backfield options are brought in.

Let go by Patriots
The Patriots released Montgomery on Tuesday.
Analysis: With J.J. Taylor and Kevin Harris also having been cut by the team Tuesday, Rhamondre Stevenson and Ezekiel Elliott are temporarily the only running backs on the team's 53-man roster. Look for some more moves to arrive in the coming days, and with that in mind it's possible that Montgomery could rejoin the mix once the cut-down dust settles.

Back at practice
Montgomery (leg) was present for practice Tuesday, but didn't participate in team drills, Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald reports.
Analysis: Now that he's back on the practice field, the versatile Montgomery will look to secure a change-of-pace role behind top back Rhamondre Stevenson and newcomer Ezekiel Elliott. The addition of Elliott solidifies the top of the Patriots' RB depth chart, which leaves Montgomery to compete with Pierre Strong, Kevin Harris and J.J. Taylor for slotting behind the team's top duo.

Still not practicing
Montgomery (leg) remained sidelined at Thursday's practice, Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald reports.
Analysis: Montgomery's continued absence doesn't help his chances of securing a key change-of-pace role out of the gate this season, and once he's back on the field he'll need to compete for depth chart slotting with Pierre Strong, Kevin Harris and J.J. Taylor. In any case, the Patriots' addition of veteran Ezekiel Elliott to a backfield led by Rhamondre Stevenson represents a hit to Montgomery's fantasy prospects ahead of Week 1.

Not warming up Thursday
Montgomery (leg) wasn't spotted in warmups ahead of Thursday's preseason opener against the Texans, Chris Mason of The Springfield Republican reports.
Analysis: Montgomery has been missing practice of late, so his looming absence Thursday isn't surprising. Look for Pierre Strong, Kevin Harris and J.J. Taylor to handle the bulk of the team's backfield snaps versus Houston.

Still not practicing
Montgomery (leg) didn't practice Tuesday, Zack Cox of NESN.com reports.
Analysis: With Montgomery continuing to miss practice, the versatile back isn't likely to suit up for the Patriots' preseason opener Thursday against the Texans. Once he's able to rejoin practice, he'll look to carve out a change-of-pace role in a backfield led by Rhamondre Stevenson, fighting for backup snaps with second-year pros Pierre Strong and Kevin Harris.

Continues to miss practice
Montgomery (leg) remained sidelined during Wednesday's practice, Dakota Randall of NESN.com reports.
Analysis: Montgomery hasn't practiced since suffering a leg injury last week, but the versatile running back has been spotted on the team's rehab field, an indication that he's progressing toward a return. With Montgomery banged up and with the Patriots managing Rhamondre Stevenson's workload in training camp, Kevin Harris, Pierre Strong and J.J. Taylor have handled added practice reps.

Still sidelined Sunday
Montgomery (leg) didn't participate in Sunday's practice, Chris Mason of The Springfield Republican reports.
Analysis: Montgomery suffered an apparent left leg injury during Thursday's practice and hasn't practiced since. Head coach Bill Belichick called the versatile running back "day-to-day," but it's unclear when he'll be back to full speed. When healthy, Montgomery will try to establish himself in a backfield that features Rhamondre Stevenson and second-year players Pierre Strong and Kevin Harris.

Deemed day-to-day
Montgomery, who suffered an apparent left leg injury during Thursday's practice, was not present for Friday's session, Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald reports.
Analysis: The report notes that after sustaining the injury, Montgomery -- who coach Bill Belichick calls "day-to-day" -- stayed on the field for a half-speed walk-through before exiting Thursday's practice. Once he returns to the field, the versatile Montgomery will look to establish a change-of-pace/pass-catching role in a New England backfield that will be led by Rhamondre Stevenson and also includes second-year players Pierre Strong and Kevin Harris.

Competing for role behind Stevenson
Montgomery is a candidate to serve as a complementary option behind lead back Rhamondre Stevenson during the upcoming season, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site reports.
Analysis: The 30-year-old missed the final 16 games of the 2022 season, but now that he's moved past his injury woes, Montgomery has caught the eye of head coach Bill Belichick during the Patriots' offseason program. With Damien Harris having moved on to Buffalo this offseason, Montgomery will be competing with second-year players Pierre Strong and Kevin Harris for reps behind Stevenson. Could be in third-down mix
Patriots running backs coach Ivan Fears indicated that Montgomery, who was limited to one game last season due to a shoulder injury, has moved past the issue, ESPN's Mike Reiss reports.
Analysis: Prior to suffering his injury in the team's 2022 season opener, Montgomery appeared poised to handle a third-down role behind Rhamondre Stevenson and Damien Harris (who's now with the Bills). Now that he's healthy again, Montgomery will have a chance to compete for a change-of-pace role behind Stevenson, while James Robinson, Pierre Strong, Kevin Harris and J.J. Gets shoulder surgery, done for 2022
Montgomery (knee) will miss the remainder of the season after recently undergoing shoulder surgery, Jim McBride of The Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: Montgomery was placed on injured reserve after playing 19 snaps in the team's season-opening loss to the Dolphins. The Patriots haven't provided many updates on his status since then, but Montgomery looks like he'll spend the remainder of the season rehabbing from the shoulder procedure. Montgomery will be due $1.36 million in 2023 and should compete for a change-of-pace role within the New England backfield next offseason, if healthy.

Unlikely to return in Week 6
Montgomery (knee) is not expected to be activated from injured reserve this week, Zack Cox of NESN.com reports.
Analysis: Montgomery was placed on IR with a right knee injury Sept. 13 following the Patriots' Week 1 loss to the Dolphins, but head coach Bill Belichick doesn't expect the running back to return in Week 6. With Damien Harris (hamstring) potentially unavailable for New England's upcoming matchup with the Browns, Pierre Strong, J.J. The Patriots placed Montgomery on injured reserve Tuesday due to an apparent aggravation of a right knee injury, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: After initially injuring his knee Aug. 26 and turning in only limited participation in practice last week, Montgomery was listed as questionable ahead of Sunday's game against the Dolphins. He ultimately gained clearance to play in the Patriots' season-opening 20-7 loss, logging 21 snaps while accounting for 13 yards and New England's only touchdown across five touches (two carries, three receptions). Catches three passes in Week 1
Montgomery was on the field for 21 of a possible 57 snaps on offense in Sunday's 20-7 loss to Miami, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: In the process, Montgomery carried twice for minus-2 yards and caught three of his four targets for 15 yards and a TD. Given that rookie Pierre Strong was inactive Week 1, it looks like Montgomery has a decent grip on the Patriots' change-of-pace duties early on this season, while Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson (two targets Sunday) remain the team's primary early-down options. Analysis: Unless he manages to log a full practice Friday, Montgomery will head into the weekend with a degree of uncertainty regarding his status for Sunday's game against the Dolphins. Limited by knee injury
Montgomery was a limited practice participant Wednesday due to a knee injury, Zack Cox of NESN.com reports.
Analysis: As Cox notes, Montgomery left New England's preseason finale with an ankle issue, but Wednesday's practice report lists him with a different injury. Either way, if Montgomery is available this weekend against the Dolphins, he's a candidate to help fill the change-of-pace/pass-catching void created by the retirement of James White. If Montgomery is out or limited, however, rookie Pierre Strong could see added touches behind top early-down options Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson.

Montgomery (ankle) was present for Wednesday's practice, Tom E. Curran of NBC Sports Boston reports.
Analysis: Curran notes that Montgomery, who was carted off the field during the Patriots' preseason finale, looked "spry" Wednesday. The Patriots will release their first Week 1 injury report later in the day, when it will be revealed whether Montgomery is listed as a full participant. In any case, the change-of-pace back's presence at practice to begin the week bodes well for his chances of suiting up Sunday against the Dolphins.

If he's available, Montgomery is a candidate to help fill the change-of-pace/pass-catching void created by the retirement of James White. The 29-year-old had been projected to help fill the change-of-pace/pass-catching void created by the retirement of James White, but if he's forced to miss time early on this season, rookie Pierre Strong is a candidate to see increased opportunities in New England's offense, while the team's top early-down options Damien…read more

Set to undergo tests on ankle
Montgomery is slated to undergo further tests to determine the severity of the ankle injury he sustained in Friday's preseason finale against the Raiders, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Montgomery had been projected to help fill the change-of-pace/pass-catching void created by the retirement of James White, but if he's forced to miss time into the regular season, rookie Pierre Strong is a candidate to see increased opportunities in New England's offense. Montgomery won't return to Friday's preseason game in Las Vegas due to a right ankle injury, Phil Perry of NBC Sports Boston reports.
Analysis: In a game in which Damien Harris (undisclosed) didn't play, Rhamondre Stevenson got all the backfield reps on the Patriots' first possession, with Montgomery entering on the team's second drive. After his only official touch (a four-yard carry), Montgomery was tended to by New England's training staff before requiring assistance to reach the sideline and a cart to go to the locker room. Injures leg Friday
Montgomery suffered a lower right leg injury during Friday's preseason game at Las Vegas, Phil Perry of NBC Sports Boston reports.
Analysis: Montgomery attempted to reach the sideline on his own, but he eventually fell back to the turf and was attended to by the Patriots' training staff before needing assistance to get off the field. He then was carted to the locker room. The severity of the injury is unknown, but anything serious would be a blow to his chances of taking on some of the retired James White's change-of-pace role in the offense. Candidates for that job otherwise are J.J. Taylor and rookie sixth-round pick Kevin Harris.

Gets into end zone Friday
Montgomery carried the ball four times for 13 yards and a touchdown and caught his only target for five yards in Friday's preseason game against the Panthers.
Analysis: Somewhat surprisingly, Damien Harris, Rhamondre Stevenson and Montgomery rotated through the offense during the first half, with the latter punching in a two-yard TD early in the second quarter. It was thought the well-traveled journeyman might be the top candidate to replace the retired James White in passing situations, but Friday's usage of the trio suggests the Patriots' backfield could be a true committee in 2022 instead, making it difficult to trust any of them on a weekly basis. Could move into receiving back role
In the wake of James White's retirement, based on how things have gone in training camp, Montgomery could have the inside track to fill the Patriots' vacated receiving back role, Evan Lazar of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: One bit of context supporting that notion is that Montgomery was among the Patriots (a group that included the team's key skill players) who sat out Thursday night's preseason opener. The report notes that rookie Pierre Strong is also candidate to help fill the void created by the absence of White, but the 2022 fourth-rounder is going to need to establish that he can be counted on in pass protection and thus may be eased into the mix if Montgomery indeed claims a notable change-of-pace role out…read more

Could claim change-of-pace role
Montgomery is a candidate for added opportunities in the Patriots offense after running back James White announced his retirement from the NFL, NESN's Zack Cox and ESPN's Mike Reiss reports.
Analysis: At this stage, Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson currently top the running back depth chart and are in line to handle the bulk of the team's early down work this season. With White no longer in the mix, though, there will be change-of-pace/pass-catching snaps and touches available, and both Cox and Reiss believe the versatile Montgomery has a chance to claim a share of them. Montgomery has been one of the Patriots' early standouts in training camp, Evan Lazar of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Though the Patriots' roster lists the 29-year-old as a wide receiver, the team's unofficial depth chart has the versatile Montgomery as a second-team running back. While Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson are expected to lead the team's rushing attack this season, Lazar believes that as things stand, "Montgomery is not just on the team; he will be incorporated into the offense and special teams." Taking RB reps
Patriots running backs coach Vinnie Sunseri relays that Montgomery, who is listed as a wide receiver on the team's official roster, has been taking backfield reps, NESN.com's Zack Cox reports.
Analysis: Given the Patriots' deep running back corps and solid depth at wideout, there's not a clear path for Montgomery to see steady touches in the team's offense at this stage. That said, the 29-year-old's versatility is an asset that could help him secure a roster spot, in particular if he makes a case to earn special teams snaps. In 14 games with the Saints last season, Montgomery carried 15 times for 44 yards while catching 16 of his 26 targets for 95 yards.

Joining Patriots
Montgomery is signing a two-year deal with the Patriots, independent NFL reporter Dov Kleiman reports.
Analysis: Montgomery may provide depth behind passing-down back James White, who was re-signed earlier this week, or he could see more of his work at wide receiver. Either way, the versatile 29-year-old isn't likely to have a big role, with any fantasy value likely requiring injuries ahead of him.

Montgomery (back) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Falcons.
Analysis: Montgomery played through the back issue last week against the Panthers and will do so again in the final game of the regular season. Montgomery was targeted twice but did not catch a pass during Sunday's 9-0 win over Tampa Bay.
Analysis: Montgomery was back in the lineup after missing Week 14 due to COVID-19, but he didn't see an increased role, despite the absence of Deonte Harris (suspension). Analysis: Though Yates' report indicates that Montgomery hasn't immediately been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Jets, given the timing of the 28-year-old's positive test, he's highly unlikely to clear the necessary protocols in advance of the Saints' 1 p.m. ET kickoff for Week 14. Analysis: Montgomery saw a heightened workload with Alvin Kamara (knee) on the shelf. Analysis: With both Kamara and Ingram (knee) out of the mix in last Thursday's game against the Bills, Montgomery logged six carries for 14 yards (while Jones had 16 carries) in addition to five catches on seven targets for 31 yards. This time around, Ingram is back in action and should lead the way, with Montgomery mixing in as a change-of-pace option, a context that could give him a degree of PPR utility Week 13.

Totals 45 yards
Montgomery rushed six times for 14 yards while catching five of seven targets for 31 yards during Thursday's 31-6 loss to the Bills.
Analysis: Montgomery saw a hike in playing time thanks to the absences of both Alvin Kamara (knee) and Mark Ingram (knee). While Tony Jones led the way on early downs, Montgomery mixed in sporadically while siphoning off a large chunk of the work on passing downs. However, neither back was very effective within an offense led by Trevor Siemian. Even if Kamara and Ingram remain sidelined in Week 13 against Dallas, Montgomery would only be a fringe fantasy consideration in deep PPR formats.

Full practice Tuesday
Montgomery (hand) was able to practice in full capacity Tuesday.
Analysis: The 28-year-old has now practiced both days to open the week, ramping up his activity Tuesday. He now seems likely to play Thanksgiving versus the Bills. With Alvin Kamara (knee) questionable to play, Montgomery may also be an active part of the team's rushing attack in Week 12.

Estimated as limited
Montgomery (hand) was listed as a limited participant on Monday's estimated injury report.
Analysis: The limited designation suggests that the 28-year-old -- who didn't practice last week -- has a chance to suit up for the Saints' Thanksgiving day matchup against the Bills. There should be more clarity regarding his status no later than Wednesday, when the Saints' final Week 12 injury report is released. While seeing most of his action as a slot receiver, Montgomery also has seen some rushing opportunities while lined up in the Saints backfield this season and could have increased usage if…read more

Out with finger injury
Montgomery (finger) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Eagles.
Analysis: Montgomery has mostly been a part-time slot receiver this season, but he picked up a handful of backfield snaps in the first quarter of last week's game at Tennessee with Alvin Kamara (knee) inactive, only to then suffer an injury of his own. Other players might be more likely to play through a finger injury, but Montgomery needs to catch passes to be useful even if he's lining up in the backfield. Misses second consecutive practice
Montgomery (finger) remained absent at practice Thursday, Amie Just of the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
Analysis: Montgomery hasn't practiced since exiting last week's loss to the Titans as a result of this injury. Also missing from Thursday's practice was Alvin Kamara (knee), who didn't suit up against Tennessee but practiced in limited fashion Wednesday. The versatile Montgomery would likely absorb some of Kamara's pass-catching duties out of the backfield if he plays Sunday in Philadelphia and Kamara doesn't, but such a scenario seems unlikely at this point.

Suiting up Week 10
Montgomery (hamstring) is active Week 10 against the Titans, Amie Just of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
Analysis: Montgomery was limited on the practice field all week, but opportunity may knock here in Tennessee now that he's officially suiting up. With Alvin Kamara on the shelf for this contest due to a knee injury, the backfield is expected to be led the Mark Ingram and Dwayne Washington, though Montgomery does have experience as a running back and could be called upon in that capacity. Montgomery (hamstring) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game in Tennessee, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: Montgomery didn't play Week 9 against the Falcons due to a hamstring injury, but after putting in limited practices Wednesday through Friday he's a candidate to return to action Sunday. With Alvin Kamara (knee) ruled out, Montgomery, if active, could get in the backfield mix along with Dwayne Washington behind Mark Ingram, while practice squad members Lamar Miller and Josh Adams may be elevated as well.

Gets one touch in win
Montgomery carried once for four yards and failed to catch his lone target in Monday's 13-10 win over the Seahawks.
Analysis: Top back Alvin Kamara led the Saints with 20 carries, while also pacing the team in targets with 11. Kamara should continue to dominate touches in the New Orleans offense, leaving little behind for peripheral players like Montgomery. The versatile wideout provides little value for fantasy purposes.

Could see backfield work Monday
Montgomery saw some work with the Saints' running backs at practice this past week, Amie Just of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
Analysis: Montgomery didn't record any touches on offense Week 5, but with Devine Ozigbo currently the roster's only healthy running back behind Alvin Kamara heading into Monday night's game, it's possible that the versatile Montgomery, who the Saints have been using at WR, could see some backfield touches versus Seattle. That said, as long as Kamara is available, he's in line to log the bulk of the team's carries.

No offensive touches
Mongtomery logged one tackle on special teams during Sunday's 33-22 win over Washington.
Analysis: Montgomery led the Saints in special-teams snaps while handling nearly half of the reps on offense. However, he did not touch the ball and was not able to build on the heightened involvement in the passing game (three receptions for 42 yards) he saw in Week 4 against the Giants. Minimal offensive involvement
Montgomery caught his only target for three yards during Sunday's 26-7 loss to the Panthers.
Analysis: Montgomery was in the starting lineup next to Chris Hogan, but he again saw less than 15 offensive snaps while Deonte Harris was the only receiver to be used in the run game. With his offensive role unlikely to grow anytime soon, Montgomery remains far off the fantasy radar.

One catch against former team
Montgomery caught his only target for five yards during Sunday's 38-3 win over Green Bay.
Analysis: While Montgomery saw just over a quarter of the offensive snaps, his most impactful plays came on special teams, particularly when he downed a punt at the Packers' 5-yard line. He should remain involved in the offense to some degree even when Michael Thomas (ankle) and Tre'Quan Smith (hamstring) are back in the fold, but Montgomery probably won't be seeing enough playing time to merit fantasy consideration even without those guys in the lineup.

Montgomery (undisclosed) was carted off the field at practice Wednesday, Amie Just of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
Analysis: The reason for Montgomery's worrying departure from practice remains undisclosed. Analysis: Payton said that the recent decision to sign Devonta Freeman started with the decision to switch things up with Montgomery, making it sound as if he isn't a consideration at running back anymore. Re-signs on one-year deal
Montgomery re-signed with the Saints on a one-year deal Saturday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: It sounds as if the contract is more incentive-laden than anything else, but it does come with a $137,500 bonus. The veteran running back played in six games last season, compiling the fewest carries (19) and rushing yards (101) since his rookie year, but almost all that production came in a meaningless Week 17 contest against the Panthers where Montgomery averaged 5.8 yards per carry.

Looking good in camp
Montgomery was the standout on Day 3 of training camp, Mike Triplett of ESPN.com reports.

His best season came in 2016 with Green Bay when he totaled 805 total yards and three scores while nabbing 44 passes. He's unlikely to see much work as a running back behind Alvin Kamara and Latavius Murray, but it's possible he sees some work in the passing game given his skill set.

Fewer than 200 yards in 2019
Montgomery played four offensive snaps and didn't touch the ball in the Week 17 season finale against Buffalo. He finishes the 2019 campaign with 32 carries for 103 yards and 13 catches for 90 yards.
Analysis: Montgomery will hit free agency, but the 26-year-old running back's versatility should lead to no shortage of suitors if the Jets don't want him back. While he's not suited to be the focal point of an offense, Montgomery's ability to catch the ball out of the backfield, while also contributing in the return game on special teams, makes him a valuable depth piece.

Powell suffered an ankle injury on New York's final drive, and coach Adam Gase wasn't sure of the injury's severity after the game. Could benefit from Bell's absence
Montgomery is expected to take on an increased snap count Sunday against the Dolphins with lead back Le'Veon Bell (illness) ruled out for the contest, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Cimini notes that the second option on the Jets' depth chart, Bilal Powell, will likely see the most significant uptick in snaps/touches while Bell is sidelined, but there should still be some extra work to go around for Montgomery and Josh Adams as both players move up a spot in the pecking order.
