Placed on reserve/retired list
The Panthers placed Penny on the reserve/retired list Tuesday, Art Stapleton of The Bergen Record reports.
Analysis: There are always a few retirements this time of year, with players realizing they're unlikely to earn a roster spot and don't have much of a future in the league. Penny was a first-round pick for Seattle back in 2018 but played only 45 games over six NFL seasons amidst a slew of injuries. He had a memorable stretch at the end of the 2021 campaign, amassing 135 or more rushing yards four times over the final five weeks, but his 671 rushing yards during that stretch represent 34.4 percent of his…read more

Intends to sign in Carolina
Penny plans to sign with the Panthers, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Penny's signing is expected to become official after the conclusion of Carolina's rookie minicamp, which ends May 12. The 2018 first-rounder is coming off a forgettable season with Philadelphia, where he was a healthy scratch for all but three contests and spent most of the year operating as the team's fourth running back. With the Panthers, Penny is in line to join a crowded backfield including rookie second-round pick Jonathon Brooks (ACL), who is expected to be ready for training camp, along…read more

Non-factor for new team
Penny finished the season with 11 carries for 33 yards in three regular-season games, adding one catch for five yards.
Analysis: Penny entered the season with a fair amount of hype, as he had a potentially large share of the carries for a productive offense available to him if he could finally stay healthy. Injuries were in fact not a problem for Penny this season, but rather than competing for the No. 1 job, he spent the year as the Eagles' fourth running back and was a healthy scratch in all but three games.

Season-high six carries
Penny was more involved than he had been all season for the Eagles on Sunday but managed a modest 16 yards on six carries at the Giants.
Analysis: Penny's signing generated some intrigue over the offseason, with the thought that a change of scenery could help the oft-injured running back. Instead, he was almost a complete non-factor, seeing the field for only 30 offensive snaps all season. Twenty of those came Week 18, with D'Andre Swift out due to illness and the Eagles resting several starters in the second half.

Stuck on sidelines
Penny did not see the field in Sunday's loss to the Cardinals.
Analysis: The Eagles had four active running backs in Sunday's game, but neither Penny nor Boston Scott received a single offensive snap. Penny has appeared in only two games all season, carrying the ball five times for 17 yards.

Surprise active in Week 17
Penny is active for just the third time this season for Sunday's Week 17 clash against the Cardinals, Zach Berman of AllPhly.com reports.
Analysis: Penny will presumably serve as a depth back behind D'Andre Swift and Kenneth Gainwell and also slot in as the backup kick returner, per Berman. The 2018 first-round pick of the Seahawks has logged just five touches all season, but with the Eagles heavily favored and facing a Cardinals defense allowing an NFL-high 147.0 rushing yards per game, Penny could have a rare opportunity to make an impact.

Healthy scratch again
Penny (coach's decision) is inactive for Monday's game against the Giants.
Analysis: Penny once again enters gameday on the Eagles' inactives list, with Week 9 being the last time he took an offensive snap. The 2018 first-round pick continues forth on a disappointing campaign with Philadelphia, having only appeared in two games thus far this season.

Inactive once again
Penny (coach's decision) is inactive for Philadelphia's matchup with the Seahawks on Monday.
Analysis: Penny will be a healthy scratch for the fifth straight week and and for the 12th time overall on the season. In his only two appearances, the 2018 first-round pick has carried the ball five times for 17 yards and failed to haul in his only target.

Inactive for fourth straight week
Penny (coach's decision) is inactive Sunday against the Cowboys.

Out for Week 13
Penny (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the 49ers.
Analysis: This is the third straight game in which Penny has been a healthy scratch after he was activated in Week 9 against the Cowboys. It'll be tough for Penny to crack into the backfield rotation unless there's an injury to D'Andre Swift, Kenneth Gainwell or Boston Scott.

Remains inactive Week 12
Penny (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Bills.
Analysis: The reserve running back was able to get on the field for two snaps in Week 9 against the Cowboys, but he was back to inactive status Monday night against the Chiefs following the Week 10 bye and is once again in street clothes Sunday. Penny doesn't figure to see any action unless injuries befall one of D'Andre Swift or Kenneth Gainwell in front of him.

Plays two offensive snaps
Penny rushed twice for eight yards in Sunday's 28-23 win over the Cowboys.
Analysis: The absence of Boston Scott (personal) allowed Penny to suit up for just the second time all season, but his role as the Eagles' third back was a very small one. He saw the field for just two offensive snaps, though he can at least take solace in the fact that the team called his number whenever he was in the game. Penny's role can't get much smaller when the Eagles return from their Week 10 bye, but it doesn't appear to be on the verge of getting much larger, either.

Active in Week 9
Penny is active for Sunday's game against the Cowboys.
Analysis: The offseason addition had garnered active status only once prior to Sunday in his brief Eagles tenure, with that transpiring back in Week 2. However, the Week 9 absence of Boston Scott (personal) opens the door for Penny to get back in uniform against the Cowboys, albeit as the projected No. 3 back behind D'Andre Swift and Kenneth Gainwell.

Healthy scratch in Week 6
Penny (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Jets.
Analysis: Penny dealt with an illness that served as an official reason for his Week 5 absence, but he's back to being a healthy scratch for Sunday's contest. As long as D'Andre Swift, Kenneth Gainwell and Boston Scott are healthy in front of him, Penny looks likely to continue to be frozen out of the team's offense.

Full practice after illness
Penny (illness) was a full practice participant Wednesday.
Analysis: Penny was a late addition to the Eagles' Week 5 injury report Saturday due to an illness, which left him doubtful to suit up Sunday at the Rams. He was ultimately inactive for the third time in five games to begin the campaign, which seemingly will be his fate as long as the rest of Philadelphia's backfield members are healthy. With all of D'Andre Swift, Kenneth Gainwell and Boston Scott avoiding Wednesday's practice report, another absence may be in store for Penny this Sunday at the Jets.

Inactive, as expected
Penny (illness) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Rams.
Analysis: Penny was added to the injury report Saturday with the illness, and as is often the case with those type of scenarios, he's been relegated to inactive status Sunday. Considering Penny had already been a healthy scratch in three of the first four games of the season, his absence won't have any impact on fantasy lineups. Penny's next chance to suit up comes in a Week 6 interconference matchup against the Jets.

Illness, doubtful for Sunday
Penny was added to the Eagles' injury report Saturday with an illness and is listed as doubtful for Sunday's matchup against the Rams.
Analysis: Penny has been a healthy scratch in two of the team's previous four games, so a possible absence doesn't reorganize the depth chart significantly. Boston Scott may see a few more opportunities alongside the usual dynamic duo of D'Andre Swift and Kenneth Gainwell.

Not active Sunday
Penny (coach's decision) is listed as inactive Sunday against the Commanders.
Analysis: Penny now has been a healthy scratch in two of four games to kick off the campaign, with his four touches to date going for 14 yards from scrimmage. While Penny dons street clothes again, the Eagles will continue to roll with D'Andre Swift as their primary running back, with Kenneth Gainwell and Boston Scott candidates to get any RB touches that linger.

Active, but fails to play
Penny was active for Monday's 25-11 win over the Buccaneers but didn't take the field for a single snap.
Analysis: Preseason speculation suggested that Penny and D'Andre Swift would compete for the top running back job in Philadelphia this season, but results through three weeks indicate that the Eagles had different plans. Penny was a healthy scratch in Week 1, and while injuries to other backs elevated him to the active roster in Weeks 2 and 3, he hasn't been a meaningful part of the game plan. Four touches in Eagles debut
Penny finished Thursday's win over the Vikings with three rushes for nine yards and one catch for five yards.
Analysis: Penny opened the season fourth on the Eagles running back depth chart, having been a healthy scratch in Week 1. He began the second game of the year as the team's third running back, with Kenneth Gainwell out with a rib injury, and he ended it as a second stringer after Boston Scott exited with a head injury in the third quarter. Should be active Thursday
Penny likely will be active for Thursday's game against Minnesota after backfield mate Kenneth Gainwell (ribs) was ruled out for the contest, Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Analysis: D'Andre Swift is the more desirable fantasy option in the Philadelphia backfield this week, despite logging just 27 percent of the offensive snaps off the bench and only two touches in the 25-20 win over New England in the season opener. Gainwell started that game, playing 62 percent of snaps and picking up 18 of the team's 22 running-back touches, but he came out of it with an injury that will keep him out for Week 2. Penny (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Patriots.
Analysis: With Penny the odd man out, at least in Week 1, Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports expects D'Andre Swift to head the team's backfield Sunday, with Kenneth Gainwell and Boston Scott also mixing in. For now, Penny is off the fantasy lineup radar, but he's a candidate to factor in as the season progresses, especially once injuries hit Philadelphia's RB corps.

The Eagles are expected to make Penny a healthy scratch for Sunday's game against the Patriots, Olivia Reiner of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Analysis: Philadelphia will release its inactive list 90 minutes prior to Sunday's 4:25 p.m. ET, at which point Penny's status will be confirmed one way or another. If Penny ends up sitting out Week 1 as expected, Kenneth Gainwell and Boston Scott would likely take on elevated roles behind presumptive starter D'Andre Swift.

Solid on two carries Thursday
Penny rushed twice for 18 yards and wasn't targeted during the Eagles' 18-18 preseason tie with the Browns on Thursday night.
Analysis: Penny was the third Eagles running back to record a touch in the contest despite the fact D'Andre Swift got the night off, and he gained 16 of his yards on one carry. The workload was much more abbreviated than Penny's nine-carry tally in the exhibition opener against the Ravens, and it could well be the 2018 first-round pick doesn't see action in Philadelphia's preseason finale at home versus the Colts next Thursday.

Penny is in uniform ahead of Thursday's preseason contest against the Browns, Martin Frank of The Delaware News Journal reports.
Analysis: After Penny and fellow offseason addition D'Andre Swift played in the Eagles' exhibition opener, Swift is expected to get the night off Thursday, while Penny is not. Meanwhile, Kenneth Gainwell and Boston Scott appear to be available along with Penny after the first two sat out this past Saturday's game. Penny rushed nine times for 34 yards and failed to bring in his only target in the Eagles' 20-19 preseason loss to the Ravens on Saturday night.
Analysis: Penny paced the Eagles in carries and received seven more rushing touches than fellow offseason arrival D'Andre Swift while playing on Philadelphia's first four possessions. Penny appears fully recovered from the fractured fibula he suffered in Week 5 of last season with the Seahawks, but come the regular season, it's likely the disparity in carries between him and Swift is not as expansive. Sharing backfield with Swift now
The Eagles traded for D'Andre Swift on Saturday to join Penny in their new-look backfield, NBC Sports Philadelphia's Dave Zangaro reports.
Analysis: The Eagles gave up a 2025 fourth-rounder and a 2023 seventh-round pick swap (No. 219 for No. 249) in exchange for Swift, who missed either three or four games each year with the Lions and has one season remaining on his rookie contract. Penny's career also has been massively impacted by injuries, which is why the Eagles got away with paying only $1.35 million (on a one-year contract) for a 2018 first-round pick with a career average of 5.7 YPC. Declares self healthy
Penny (leg) told reporters at his introductory press conference that he's fully recovered from a fractured fibula and will be ready for spring practices, Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Analysis: While his ability to stay healthy remains a concern, the Eagles' new running back seems to be doing well at the moment and profiles as the new lead runner for a high-powered offense that just lost Miles Sanders to the Panthers. The Eagles and Penny (lower leg) agreed to terms on a contract Tuesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Since the Seahawks made Penny a first-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, he's been beset by injuries, seeing action in just 42 of 82 possible games across five seasons. What he's been able to do when available is significant, as he's averaged 5.7 YPC and reeled off 24 runs of 20-plus yards among his 337 career rushes. Still rehabbing, per Carroll
Coach Pete Carroll said Monday that Penny (ankle) has yet to start running and remains in the midst of his rehab from a broken left fibula and high-ankle sprain, Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Penny suffered the injuries back in Week 5 and underwent surgery to repair the fracture Oct. 12, getting a four-month recovery timetable at the time. That may have inched up, if only for a day, after he told Ian Furness of 93.3 KJR Seattle on Sunday that he may be able to suit up in the playoffs if the Seahawks play beyond Week 18. Penny (ankle/fibula) said Sunday that there's a "decent chance" he could return if the Seahawks make the playoffs, Curtis Crabtree of Fox 13 Seattle reports.
Analysis: Penny underwent surgery to repair his left ankle and fractured fibula in October and has been ruled out for the remainder of the regular season, but he's apparently made good progress in his recovery and is in the mix for a return during the playoffs. Shuttled to IR
Seattle placed Penny (ankle/fibula) on injured reserve Friday, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports.
Analysis: Penny's move to IR was merely a formality after he underwent season-ending surgery Tuesday to repair his left ankle and fractured fibula. The transaction opens up a spot on the 53-man roster, but it's unclear if Seattle plans to use it on another running back. Seattle already claimed Tony Jones off waivers from New Orleans earlier this week to add depth behind rookie Kenneth Walker, who is expected to step into a lead role out of the backfield beginning with Sunday's game against the Cardinals.

Will undergo surgery Tuesday
Penny will undergo season-ending surgery on his fractured fibula Tuesday and faces a four-month recovery, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Penny suffered the injury during the team's Week 5 loss to the Saints and will miss the remainder of the 2022 campaign. However, per Rapoport, an MRI on Monday revealed that his ankle was relatively clean, so he should make a full recovery. Coach Pete Carroll said Monday that Penny (lower leg) is done for the season due to a broken fibula and a high-ankle sprain, Gregg Bell of The Tacoma News Tribune reports.
Analysis: Penny will require season-ending surgery, an outcome which Carroll correctly diagnosed as "a heartbreaking loss for him." The 2018 first-round pick had averaged an outstanding 6.1 yards per carry through the first five weeks of the season, building off his 6.3 YPC mark from 2021. Gains 69 yards in loss
Penny rushed 14 times for 66 yards and caught his lone target for three yards in Sunday's 27-23 loss to the Falcons.
Analysis: The Seahawks were in this game from start to finish, and Penny's workload (14 of 21 running back carries) reflected that better than last week's blowout loss to San Francisco. It has been a disappointing start to the 2022 campaign for the popular breakout candidate, as he now sits at a pedestrian 32 carries for 141 yards and no touchdowns through three contests. Seattle's receiving back, Travis Homer (ribs), went down to injury in Sunday's loss, so Penny could see a few extra targets if the…read more

Held in check in Week 2
Penny gained 15 yards on six carries in Sunday's 27-7 loss to the 49ers.
Analysis: The entire Seattle running game got shut down, managing only 36 rushing yards total and 2.6 yards per carry, so Penny's poor performance wasn't out of place. Rookie Kenneth Walker also saw six touches (four carries and two catches) in his NFL debut, and the potential for a true timeshare between the two should be concerning for fantasy GMs with Penny stock, but it's hard to draw many conclusions from a game script that forced the Seahawks away from their preferred ground-heavy approach. Gets 14 touches in Week 1 win
Penny rushed 12 times for 60 yards and caught two of three targets for seven yards in Monday's 17-16 win over the Broncos.
Analysis: Penny picked up where he left off late last season as Seattle's featured back, as other Seahawks running backs combined for just one rushing attempt. Penny put the ball on the ground at the end of a 26-yard run in the second quarter, but a mix of hustle and awareness from center Austin Blythe to get on top of it ensured that Seattle kept possession. A would-be 23-yard run was erased by a holding penalty in the third, but Penny still averaged a productive 5.0 yards on the carries that counted.…read more

Puts end to COVID absence
Coach Pete Carroll said Penny returned to team facilities Tuesday from his bout with COVID-19, Curtis Crabtree of Sports Radio 950 KJR Seattle reports.
Analysis: Penny tested positive for COVID-19 last Thursday, ensuring that he wouldn't see any game action during the preseason. He sat out the exhibition opener due to a minor groin injury before being a healthy scratch for preseason Week 2. Penny's ability to stay healthy has been an issue throughout his career, but his impressive end to the 2021 campaign (671 yards and six TDs on the ground over the final five games) has him in good standing ahead of a Week 1 matchup with the Broncos. Penny tested positive for COVID-19 and won't play in Friday's preseason game against Dallas, Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Penny reportedly doesn't have serious symptoms and is expected to rejoin the team within a few days. He's still on track for the start Week 1 against Denver, with potential for an especially large workload if rookie second-round pick Kenneth Walker (abdomen) isn't ready.

Unlikely for preseason finale
Penny isn't likely to play in Friday's preseason game against Dallas, with the Seahawks trying to keep him healthy for Week 1 against Denver, Gregg Bell of The Tacoma News Tribune reports.
Analysis: Penny is set to enter Week 1 as the starter, and he could see an especially large workload early on with fellow running back Kenneth Walker (abdomen) recovering from surgery. The Seahawks weren't ready to rule the rookie out beyond the preseason at the time of surgery, but it doesn't appears his chances of being ready for the beginning of the regular season are great.

Not in line to play Thursday
Penny isn't expected to play in Thursday's preseason game against the Bears, Gregg Bell of The Tacoma News Tribune reports.
Analysis: The same goes for rookie second-round running back Kenneth Walker, who is slated for surgery to repair a hernia. If all goes well in his recovery, Walker is in line to play Week 1, while Penny still has a chance to make an appearance before then in the Seahawks' final exhibition Friday, Aug. 26 at Dallas. Penny didn't play in the team's preseason opener due to a minor groin injury, so it appears coach Pete Carroll and company are being cautious with their presumed top RB.

Back on practice field
Penny (groin) returned to practice Tuesday, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: The Seahawks held Penny out of Saturday's exhibition opener at Pittsburgh due to a minor groin injury, but as he got back on the field Tuesday he took handoffs in individual work before notching a 40-yard carry once team drills kicked off, per Condotta. While his issues staying healthy are well known, Penny will continue his quest to be the Seahawks' No. 1 running back to begin the season, with rookie second-round pick Kenneth Walker his primary competition.

Sits out preseason opener
Penny, who is dealing with a minor groin injury, didn't play in Saturday's preseason opener against the Steelers, Gregg Bell of the Seattle News-Tribune reports.
Analysis: With Penny sitting this one out, 2022 second-rounder Kenneth Walker drew the start at running back for Seattle, while Travis Homer, DeeJay Dallas and Darwin Thompson also logged carries. For now, consider Penny day-to-day ahead of Thursday night's contest against the Bears.

Competition clearer sans Carson
Penny will compete with Kenneth Walker for the starting running back job following Tuesday's report that Chris Carson (neck) will retire, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Penny, Carson and Walker, a rookie second-round pick, had all been viewed as candidates for the gig heading into training camp. While Penny's strong finish to the 2021 campaign made him the favorite to remain the top option on the depth chart, Carson's presence as a bruiser with pass-catching capabilities could have cut into Penny's workload. Penny is expected to be the Seahawks' primary running back in 2022, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Of course, this includes the caveat that Penny stays healthy, which is a legitimate concern because he's been active for just 23 games over the last three seasons. However, the 2018 first-round pick is healthy heading into training camp. After rushing for 671 yards (7.3 YPC) and six touchdowns over the final five games last year, Penny doesn't need to prove much in training camp to win the starting job over rookie second-round pick Kenneth Walker, and Chris Carson's (neck) odds of being cleared…read more

Penny (hamstring) participated in Tuesday's practice, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Penny sat out of OTAs last week due to a slight hamstring issue, so it's encouraging to see him back at practice, even if it was a lighter session. The 2018 first-round pick finished last season with 119 carries for 749 yards and six touchdowns -- all career highs -- and figures to be a vital piece for the Seahawks in 2022. Penny and second-round pick Kenneth Walker are currently the top healthy options in Seattle's backfield with Chris Carson still nursing a delicate neck injury.

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said Monday that Penny is resting a slight hamstring issue during the start of Seattle's voluntary OTAs, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Penny agreed to a one-year, $5.75 million contract this offseason to return to Seattle after finishing with 119 carries for 749 yards and six touchdowns -- all career highs -- across 10 appearances last season. If healthy, Chris Carson (neck) is a candidate to lead the backfield in 2022, but the Seahawks have hinted that they have doubts he'll be ready for the start of the regular season, per Gregg Bell of The Tacoma News Tribune. Penny ran for 190 yards and one touchdown on 23 carries against Arizona on Sunday.
Analysis: There wasn't much work to do as a pass catcher with Russell Wilson throwing only 26 pass attempts, but the red-hot running back did all the necessary damage on the ground. With this big game, Penny posted 706 rushing yards (7.7 yards per carry) and six rushing touchdowns in his final five games and drastically changed his public perception as he heads into free agency. Penny ran for 170 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries and caught two passes for 15 yards on three targets against Detroit on Sunday.
Analysis: The Lions defense is one of the league's most vulnerable, but Penny still ran in an impressive fashion. Particularly given the context of the prior four games, a span during which Penny ran for 346 yards and five touchdowns on 54 carries (6.4 YPC), it's safe to say that Penny is playing at a legitimately standout level at the moment. Penny carried the ball 17 times for 135 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 25-24 loss to the Bears.
Analysis: He also failed to haul in his only target, but Penny supplied more than enough offense with his legs in snowy conditions in Seattle. Over the last three games, the 2018 first-round pick has piled up 311 rushing yards and three TDs as he tries to re-establish some value heading into free agency after what has been a disappointing, injury-plagued career. Penny rushed 11 times for 39 yards while catching both of his targets for five yards in Tuesday's 20-10 loss to the Rams.
Analysis: Penny wound up splitting touches with fellow back DeeJay Dallas, finishing with two more total touches while the latter collected the team's lone touchdown. Head coach Pete Carroll stated that he would continue to use a combination of backs to close out this injury-plagued season, but that Penny deserved a shot to continue starting after going off against the Texans last week (16-137-2). Head coach Pete Carroll said Monday that the Seahawks will continue rotating running backs, but Penny deserves the chance to be the primary option out of the backfield, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: While Carroll won't commit to Penny being the unequivocal No. 1 back, he seemingly admitted that it's Penny's job to lose. That's not surprising after Penny rushed 16 times for 137 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 33-13 win over the Texans while Alex Collins generated just 16 yards on seven carries. Enjoys career day against Texans
Penny rushed 16 times for 137 yards and two touchdowns and caught his lone target for one yard in Sunday's 33-13 win over the Texans
Analysis: Head coach Pete Carroll wasn't bluffing when he said Penny would be a big part of Seattle's game plan in Week 14. The 2018 first-round pick capitalized on the opportunity, scoring touchdowns from 32 and 47 yards while putting up a career high in rushing yards. Leads backfield in snaps
Penny rushed 10 times for 35 yards and caught his lone target for 27 yards in Sunday's 30-23 loss to the 49ers.
Analysis: Penny led the Seahawks' committee backfield with a season-high 40 percent snap share, playing more than Travis Homer (30 percent) and Adrian Peterson (27 percent). The 2018 first-round pick wasn't very efficient on the ground, and his longest run was for 11 yards. Injury downplayed
Head coach Pete Carroll downplayed Penny's hamstring injury Monday, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports. "[Penny] has a slight hamstring we've got to deal with...It's not a bad injury, but there's something there."
Analysis: Carroll is notoriously optimistic about injuries, so don't read into this too much. We have reason to be concerned about Penny, as he has played just seven games since tearing his ACL in December of 2019. The 2018 first-round pick will likely carry at least a questionable tag into Monday's game versus the Football Team. Could get bigger role Week 11
Seattle head coach Pete Carroll said Penny should be in store for a larger role Sunday's game against the Cardinals after the running back didn't see the field in last week's 17-0 loss to the Packers, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports. "I'm really looking forward to Rashaad, really looking forward to seeing where he goes and contributes this week," Carroll said. "He's got a really good role for us and we're anxious to see him get going. As we go through the next couple of weeks, you'll see him continue to be a big part of it."
Analysis: Penny was phased out of the game plan in Seattle's Week 10 loss to the Packers after he mustered only 16 yards on 13 carries in his first two contests upon returning from a five-week absence due to a calf injury. Fortunately for Penny, No. 1 back Alex Collins (3.3 yards per carry) hasn't performed much better on a larger sample of totes over the past three games, so there could be an opportunity for the 2018 first-round pick to move up the depth chart if he's able to capitalize on more of his…read more

Penny didn't record a snap in Sunday's 17-0 loss to the Packers.
Analysis: Penny recorded 16 yards on 13 carries over the previous two games, and the Seahawks don't have any more leeway to experiment with the 2018 first-round pick if they want to make a real playoff push. Seven carries for seven yards
Penny rushed seven times for seven yards in Sunday's 31-7 win over the Jaguars.
Analysis: Penny finished second on the team in carries behind Alex Collins (10), but he was brutally inefficient for the second straight week. In Week 7, he gained nine yards on six carries. Perhaps he's still getting back into the groove after a long injury layoff, but it's equally as likely that he's not going to become the player the Seahawks thought they were drafting in the first round back in 2018. He'll likely be a change-of-pace back again in Week 10 against the Packers.

Dismal production Monday
Penny (calf) rushed six times for nine yards in Monday's 13-10 loss to the Saints.
Analysis: Penny handled 20 offensive snaps (36 percent) but couldn't get anything going on the ground. Penny's performance alone doesn't warrant more playing time moving forward, but Alex Collins -- who rushed 16 times for 35 yards -- failed to distinguish himself as well. May practice next week
Coach Pete Carroll said Friday that Penny (calf) is expected to return to practice next week when he's first eligible to be designated to return from injured reserve, Curtis Crabtree of Sports Radio 950 KJR Seattle reports.
Analysis: While Penny has been dealing with a strained calf since the season opener, the Seahawks didn't place him on IR until just before Week 4. Thus, his time away from practice started ticking at that point, and Sunday's game in Pittsburgh will mark his third that he'll be on the reserve list. Elsewhere in the backfield, starter Chris Carson (neck) himself may be going to injured reserve soon, meaning Penny could get back in the mix as soon as Week 7 against the Saints if he proves his health,…read more

Could return Week 6
Coach Pete Carroll suggested Friday that Penny (calf) could return for Week 6 against Pittsburgh, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Penny's potential return takes on added importance with Chris Carson bothered by a neck injury, though at this point the 2018 first-round pick may be stuck behind Alex Collins as well. Still, the Seahawks hope to get Penny back from IR in Week 6, as he'd at least be another option for their banged-up offense. Penny last played in Week 1.

Shifts to injured reserve
Penny (calf) was placed on injured reserve Saturday, Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: It's probably not good news that Penny was placed on injured reserve after multiple weeks missed due to a calf injury. The 2018 first-round pick reportedly had a great training camp and was pushing for a crucial backup role behind Chris Carson, but that'll be put on hold for now. Penny has played in just 14 of the last 35 games due to a variety of injuries.

Still sidelined Sunday
Penny (calf) has been ruled out for Sunday's game at Seattle, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports.
Analysis: Penny has been hindered by a left calf injury all season, containing him to one appearance Week 1. Since then, he's been sidelined and will miss a third consecutive contest this weekend. Chris Carson is Seattle's unquestioned lead back, and with Penny out Travis Homer and Alex Collins again will handle any RB reps that linger.

Not practicing yet
Penny (calf) was a non-participant at Thursday's practice, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports.
Analysis: As expected, the Seahawks continue to exercise caution with Penny, the oft-injured back who has made just four appearances the past two seasons. On a positive note, coach Pete Carroll told Boyle on Wednesday that Penny's left calf is closing in on 100 percent health. Still, there's an expectation Penny misses a third game in a row Sunday in San Francisco, which would allow Travis Homer and Alex Collins to handle the RB snaps that Chris Carson yields to the reserves.

Trending toward another absence
Penny (calf) is unlikely to be available for Sunday's game at San Francisco, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports. "I don't expect him to be back this week," head coach Pete Carroll said Wednesday. "I don't think he'll make it."
Analysis: Carroll added that Penny's left calf is close to 100 percent. Penny could probably suit up in his current state, but the team is exercising caution with the running back, likely due to his shaky medical record. On Wednesday, Penny didn't practice, but he'll have a few more chances to do so before the weekend. If Penny sits out a third game in a row Sunday, Travis Homer and Alex Collins will split the reps that don't go to starting running back Chris Carson.

Hope for Week 4 return
Coach Pete Carroll said Friday that the Seahawks are hopeful Penny (calf), who is missing his second game in a row Sunday at Minnesota, is able to return next week, John Boyle of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Seattle next holds an official practice Wednesday, at which point Penny's activity level, or lack thereof, may be telling of his potential to play. In the meantime, though, the Seahawks will lean on Alex Collins, Travis Homer and DeeJay Dallas to handle the RB reps that don't go to starter Chris Carson.

Penny (calf) was a non-participant at Thursday's practice, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports.
Analysis: Since coach Pete Carroll told Brady Henderson of ESPN.com on Wednesday that Penny was unlikely to play Sunday in Minnesota, the running back hasn't logged any activity on the practice field this week. Penny has another chance to get in some reps Friday, but if he doesn't he may be destined for a second DNP in a row since straining his calf Week 1.

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said Wednesday that Penny (calf) isn't expected to play Sunday at Minnesota, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Carroll included a caveat during Wednesday's media session, stating an "unexpected turn" in Penny's health could allow him to suit up this weekend. Not suiting up Week 2
Penny (calf) is listed as inactive Sunday versus the Titans.

Unlikely to play Sunday
Penny (calf) is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against the Titans, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports.
Analysis: Since Penny hurt his calf Week 1 at Indianapolis, the injury has transformed from minor to one that's expected to sideline him for a few weeks. With a doubtful designation for Sunday, he's almost certainly going to be listed among the Seattle's inactives, which would give Alex Collins, DeeJay Dallas and Travis Homer a chance to make an impact in the ground game behind starter Chris Carson.

Remains out at practice
Penny (calf) was a non-participant at Thursday's practice, Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Since injuring his left calf in the season opener, Penny has been described as first dealing with a minor issue, then a player expected to miss multiple weeks. Coach Pete Carroll clarified the situation somewhat Monday, telling Dugar that Penny was unlikely to play Week 2 against the Titans. With back-to-back absences in practice so far this week, Penny seems to be trending that way, but the Seahawks may not provide clarity until the release of Friday's injury report.

Unlikely to play Week 2
Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said Monday that Penny (calf) is trending toward sitting out Sunday's game against the Titans, Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Ultimately, the severity of Penny's strained calf will determine when he's next able to suit up, but the Seahawks could allow him to take his time and place him on injured reserve to free up a roster spot. If Penny is sidelined Week 2, the trio of Alex Collins, Travis Homer and DeeJay Dallas will be the backups to starting running back Chris Carson.

Penny (calf) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game at Indianapolis, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports.
Analysis: The Seahawks enter Sunday with five healthy running backs, though at least one presumably will be placed on the inactive list. Chris Carson figures to get the start and most of the carries, but Penny could be the second man up, at least for early downs. The other options are Alex Collins, Travis Homer and DeeJay Dallas.

Limited by calf injury
Penny was a limited practice participant Wednesday due to a calf injury, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports.
Analysis: Penny tended to a thigh issue in training camp, only to make two appearances during the preseason slate, combining for 12 carries for 32 yards and two receptions (on three targets) for 11 yards. The production wasn't anything to write home about, and he's now dealing with another soft-tissue injury. With Chris Carson at the head of Seattle's backfield, Penny would vie with Alex Collins and perhaps Travis Homer for change-of-pace touches Week 1 at Indianapolis, assuming he's able to suit up.

Hangs onto roster spot
Penny was one of five running backs to make the Seahawks' 53-man roster released Tuesday, Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Penny struggled during the preseason, but the exhibition snaps were more about him getting back into the swing of things after having logged just 11 carries since tearing his ACL in 2019. However, Penny's underwhelming performance allowed Alex Collins to sneak into the No. 2 running back conversation. For fantasy managers, Penny isn't a surefire insurance policy to Chris Carson, though he may have the most upside.

Penny rushed seven times for 24 yards and brought in one of two targets for five yards in the Seahawks' 27-0 preseason win over the Chargers on Saturday night.
Analysis: Penny was able to get on the field for the final two preseason games and was more productive on the ground than during his five-carry, eight-yard performance last Saturday against the Broncos. The 2018 first-round pick did see backfield mate Alex Collins turn in an impressive performance in which he led the Seahawks in rushing yards (37), receptions (seven) and receiving yards (37) while also contributing a rushing score, however, so it remains to be seen if that will shake up the depth chart…read more

Analysis: After tearing his ACL in Week 14 of the 2019 season, Penny came back last year and logged just 11 carries for 34 yards over three games. May play Saturday
Coach Pete Carroll hopes Penny (thigh) is able to suit up and play during Saturday's preseason game against the Broncos, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Due to draft pedigree alone, the 2018 first-round pick should be the favorite to back up starter Chris Carson, but Penny has appeared in just three regular-season games since tearing his ACL in December 2019. He underwent a cleanup procedure on his knee in the offseason and has missed more than a week of practice recently with a thigh concern. Could practice next week
Coach Pete Carroll said Penny (thigh) may return to practice next week, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com reports. "Next week should be a really big week for him," Carroll noted. "He's really close."
Analysis: Penny has missed practice since suffering what Carroll considered a "minor" thigh injury Sunday. Thus, Penny will sit out Saturday's preseason game in Las Vegas, with an aim to get back on the field shortly thereafter. Behind Chris Carson, Penny's pedigree as a 2018 first-rounder likely gives him the best shot for touches in the Seahawks backfield when healthy. The Seahawks did not pick up the fifth-year option on Penny's rookie contract Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Penny has failed to live up to expectations since being selected in the first round of the 2018 Draft, and he was limited to just three appearances last season while recovering from a torn ACL. The team tacked on a questionable designation Friday, while at the same time elevating Alex Collins from the practice squad. Could practice next week
Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said Tuesday that he's hoping Penny (knee) will be ready to practice with the team next week, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Penny has been sidelined all season while rehabbing from the torn ACL he suffered Week 14 of 2019, but he looks to finally be nearing the finish line in his recovery. Because of his lengthy layoff, Penny will likely require several practices to get up to full speed, so he may still be multiple weeks away from making his way back to the 53-man roster. If he does get activated at some point, the Seahawks probably wouldn't ask him to take on more than a handful of touches per game behind lead back…read more

Still a few weeks away
Coach Pete Carroll said Thursday that Penny (knee) is "a few weeks away" from retaking the field, Curtis Crabtree of Sports Radio 950 KJR Seattle reports.
Analysis: Penny has spent the entire 2020 campaign on the PUP list and still hasn't practiced, but it appears that the Seahawks still expect him to return at some point this season. However, just as the PUP list restricts players from practicing for the first six weeks of the season, it is also required that players must either then resume practicing, shift to IR or be released after an additional five weeks elapse, so Seattle will need to make a decision on Penny sooner rather than later.

Still not practicing
Coach Pete Carroll said Monday that Penny (knee) is making good progress but hasn't returned to practice, Curtis Crabtree of Sports Radio 950 KJR Seattle reports. "It's just a matter of when they feel and he feels ready to go out there and bang those cuts," Carroll said.
Analysis: Carroll has been ambivalent about Penny's condition all season, consistently praising the running back's recovery but falling short of providing a clear timeline to return. Time is running out, though, as Penny will need to return to practice by Week 11. Otherwise, he'll be required to stay on the PUP list for the rest of the season.

Not likely for Week 8 return
Coach Pete Carroll said Monday that Penny (knee) will "probably not" return Week 8 against the 49ers, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Carroll appears committed to not rushing Penny back from the ACL tear he sustained Week 14 last season, even with Chris Carson set to undergo an MRI on what's been called a mid-foot sprain. The decision to allow Penny extended time to rehab likely stems in part due to Carroll's confidence in No. 2 running back Carlos Hyde, in addition to the fact that Penny's surgery uncovered additional damage in his knee. An official timetable for the 2018 first-round pick's return still remains undisclosed.

No timeline yet for return
Coach Pete Carroll said Monday that there's "no set ETA" for Penny (knee) to return to the Seahawks' active roster, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Two weeks removed from saying Penny was "getting really close" but wouldn't be rushed back, Carroll had another non-update on Penny's recovery from the torn left ACL he suffered Week 14 of last season. The prolonged rehab likely stems from the additional damage found in the knee during surgery, but there's no sense yet when the Seahawks will open his window to return from the reserve/PUP list. In the meantime, Chris Carson will be relied upon as the team's No. 1 back, with Carlos Hyde…read more

Won't be rushed back
Coach Pete Carroll said Monday that Penny (knee) is close to returning but won't be rushed back into the lineup, Curtis Crabtree of Sports Radio 950 KJR Seattle reports.
Analysis: Penny tore his ACL last year Week 14 and wasn't 100 percent to begin the 2020 season, so he was placed on the PUP list to ensure a full recovery. Carroll has consistently praised Penny's progress, and the 2018 first-rounder will be eligible to return to the lineup in Week 7's matchup against the 49ers. However, Carroll rightly sees no reason to rush him back because Chris Carson is healthy and handling lead back duties admirably. These plans are subject to change if Carson gets hurt, but…read more

'Ahead of schedule' in recovery
Coach Pete Carroll called Penny "ahead of schedule" in his recovery from a torn ACL, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Penny tore up his left knee Week 14 of last season, and his subsequent surgery revealed additional damage on top of the ACL tear. It wasn't a surprise by any means that he started this season on the reserve/PUP list, but Carroll seems to believe Penny will be able to practice not long after he's first eligible to do so in mid-to-late October. In the season opener, no Seahawks running back earned more than Chris Carson's 45 percent share of the snaps on offense, which was followed by Carlos Hyde…read more

Starts season on PUP list
The Seahawks placed Penny (knee) on the reserve/PUP list Saturday, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports.
Analysis: This move was expected all along, as Penny's December knee injury revealed damage beyond just a torn ACL. The Seahawks can afford to keep him on the sidelines until he's fully healthy as well since they signed Carlos Hyde (undisclosed) and drafted DeeJay Dallas this offseason. They also have second-year back Travis Homer on the roster. Penny can be activated off the PUP list and begin practicing after Week 6. At that point, he could cut into Chris Carson's workload if he's fully healthy, but…read more

Goes on PUP list
The Seahawks placed Penny (knee) on the active/PUP list Monday, Albert Breer of TheMMQB.com reports.
Analysis: The transaction came shortly after coach Pete Carroll said Penny would report to training camp Friday and go through COVID-19 intake testing, per Gregg Bell of The Tacoma News Tribune. While Penny's upcoming camp attendance is a positive sign, Carroll didn't elaborate on where exactly the running back stands in his recovery from reconstructive left knee surgery he required in December. Given the timing of his procedure to address the torn ACL, Penny still may be hard pressed to gain clearance…read more

Headed for PUP list?
Penny (knee) could open the 2020 season on the PUP list, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: The Seahawks have consistently been optimistic about Chris Carson's recovery from a hip fracture, while the tone has been far more cautious when discussing Penny's rehab from ACL surgery. GM John Schneider cautioned that the timeline could be tricky, noting that the 2018 first-round pick suffered his major injury late in the season (Dec. 8 to be exact). Reports from January suggested the damage in Penny's left knee went beyond an ACL tear, but he did show visible progress in March when he…read more

Penny (knee), via his personal Twitter account, posted a video of himself taking part in footwork drills.
Analysis: At last check, Penny was able to ride on a stationary bike, but it now appears his rehab has advanced to the point he can get up on his feet. Penny still has several months to go in his recovery, but things seem to be going as planned thus far.

Preseason PUP candidate
Penny (knee) is a candidate to begin training camp on the Seahawks' preseason PUP list, Curtis Crabtree of Sports Radio 950 KJR Seattle reports.
Analysis: That's not surprising considering Penny tore his ACL in Week 14 of the 2019 season and subsequently had surgery later in December. Given the timing of his injury, coupled with reports that the running back's knee woes went beyond his ACL tear, Penny's status for Seattle's season opener remains murky. On the plus side with regard to the team's Week 1 backfield composition, Chris Carson (hip) is on track to be ready for the start of the coming campaign, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com reports.

Making rehab prgoress
Penny (knee) used a stationary bike Tuesday, taking a step forward in his rehab from a torn ACL, NFL.com's Kevin Patra reports.
Analysis: Penny tore up his knee Week 14 and had surgery later in December. Coach Pete Carroll said the injury involved damage beyond an ACL tear, but Carroll also mentioned in early January that the Seahawks were pleased with Penny's early progress. The 24-year-old faces a challenge to make it back on the field for the early part of the 2020 campaign, while backfield mate Chris Carson is expected to recover from a hip fracture without needing surgery, potentially returning to practice as soon as May or…read more

Has additional damage beyond ACL
Penny's knee injury involves more damage than just a torn ACL, Gregg Bell of the Tacoma News Tribune reports. "There were some other things that they had to clean up and all that," said Seahawks coach Pete Carroll. "It was more than just a simple ACL surgery."
Analysis: An ACL tear typically requires 9-to-12 months for recovery/rehab, and additional damage to the knee will make it even more of a challenge for Penny to be ready by Week 1 of 2020. The Seahawks do anticipate a return to full strength eventually, with the 2018 first-round pick presumably hoping to contribute to the team at some point during his third pro season. Meanwhile, fellow running back Chris Carson is expected to avoid surgery for his season-ending hip injury, though he too faces an…read more

Goes to IR as expected
Penny (knee) was placed on injured reserve Saturday, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official sitereports.
Analysis: This was a mere formality, as Penny is slated to have surgery to repair his torn ACL, which he suffered last Sunday against the Rams. The 2018 first-round pick does not have a recovery timetable set as of yet, but it's possible the extensive knee injury could ultimately force Penny to miss portions of the 2020 season as well, though more information regarding the expected timeline won't occur until some time after the initial surgery.

Preparing for surgery
Coach Pete Carroll said Wednesday that Penny will undergo surgery to repair a torn ACL once the swelling in his left knee subsides, Gregg Bell of The Tacoma News Tribune reports.
Analysis: Carroll also indicated that measures to address additional damage to Penny's knee could be taken after his ACL is repaired, according to Curtis Crabtree of Sports Radio 950 KJR Seattle. The 2018 first-round pick is expected to be sidelined until at least training camp, leaving his availability for the start of the 2020 season on shaky ground. An MRI confirmed that Penny tore his ACL during Sunday night's loss to the Rams, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: The report adds Penny has additional damage to his knee and that the 2018 first-rounder will be sidelined until training camp. With the promising back unavailable down the stretch, Chris Carson is slated to head the Seattle ground game going forward, with C.J. Prosise and rookie Travis Homer in line to work in complementary roles.

Ruled out for season
Penny (knee) has been ruled out for the rest of the 2019 season, Gregg Bell of The Tacoma News Tribune reports.
Analysis: Penny suffered a knee injury on the first drive of Sunday's 28-12 loss to the Rams, and additional testing revealed he's dealing with an ACL sprain. The second-year running back will be placed on IR soon, and he'll finish the season with 65 rushes for 370 yards (5.7 YPC) and three touchdowns while adding eight receptions for 83 yards and a score. It's unsettled whether Penny's injury will affect his status for the 2020 season. Chris Carson is set to be the bell cow moving forward, and C.J.…read more

Suffers significant ACL sprain
Coach Pete Carroll described Penny's injury as a significant ACL sprain in his post-game interview after Sunday's loss to the Rams, Aaron J. Fentress of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: While Penny will likely require additional tests to determine just how significant this injury is, it sounds like he's staring at a multi-week absence. Chris Carson should recapture most of the touches vacated by Penny's absence, with C.J. Prosise and Travis Homer providing backfield depth.

Ruled out of SNF
Penny has been ruled out with a knee injury suffered Sunday against the Rams.
Analysis: Chris Carson will go back to a workhorse role on the ground for Seattle. This injury comes just as Penny had begun earning more touches, and he had been making the most of them with three touchdowns in the previous two weeks. Expect word on the severity of Penny's injury to be released after the game.

Heads to locker room early
Penny had to go to the locker room with an undisclosed injury in the first quarter of Sunday's game against the Rams, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Penny's return should be considered questionable at best. He made a 16-yard catch before departing, but it looked like he got hurt at the end of the play, and he made his way to the locker room soon after getting checked out in the blue medical tent. This ill-timed injury comes just as the second-year running back had mustered the best two-week stretch of his career in the preceding games.

Explosive en route to two scores
Penny rushed 15 times for 74 yards and a touchdown and caught four of five targets for 33 yards and a score in Monday's 37-30 win over the Vikings.
Analysis: Both of Seattle's primary running backs saw action on the first drive and looked explosive in the process, and Chris Carson finished the contest with 109 yards from scrimmage and a score of his own. While Carson garnered a majority of the rushes (23), he averaged 4.4 yards per carry compared to Penny's 4.9. Furthermore, Penny showcased intriguing pass-catching prowess with his best effort through the air since his NFL debut, when he hauled in four passes for 35 yards. While most game scripts…read more

May get more reps
Penny may be in line for more consistent work moving forward, Gregg Bell of The Tacoma News Tribune reports. "We are going to see if we can get more out of [Penny]," coach Pete Carroll said Wednesday.
Analysis: Penny and starter Chris Carson split the offensive snaps almost down the middle during Sunday's 17-9 win at Philadelphia, with the former getting 30 to the latter's 31 (of 61 total). Taking advantage of a career-high share of those plays, Penny compiled 14 carries for 129 yards and one touchdown, while Carson gained 57 yards from scrimmage on his 12 touches and fumbled for a seventh time this season. Erupts for 129 yards, touchdown
Penny rushed 14 times for 129 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 17-9 win over the Eagles.
Analysis: Penny entered the contest with just 167 rushing yards as the secondary option to Chris Carson, but the second-year pro out-touched Carson 14-12 and outgained him by 72 yards. His day was highlighted by breaking free for a career-best 58-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, as he showcased the explosiveness that enticed the Seahawks to select him in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. No tread after fumble
Penny rushed twice for two yards and lost a fumble in Monday's 27-24 win over the 49ers.
Analysis: It took until the first drive of the second half for Penny to log an offensive snap, and he almost immediately made the Seahawks' coaching staff regret its decision by fumbling at midfield. The second-year pro didn't see the field after that whiff. Chris Carson also fumbled the football (the Seahawks recovered), but it was clear he had a longer leash than Penny by recording 28 touches. Penny will look to get back into the coaches' good graces in the team's next game Nov. 24 against the Eagles.

Four carries in win
Penny rushed four times for 12 yards in Sunday's 40-34 overtime win against the Buccaneers.
Analysis: Penny impressed last week as he managed 55 yards on just eight carries, but his role dried up in this outing. Despite Chris Carson fumbling twice, Penny barely got on the field, as he logged 11 of a possible 75 offensive snaps. Carson's fumbles are a concern, but he racked up 105 yards on 16 carries while catching both targets for 28 yards. His production seems to cancel out the costly turnovers at this point, but Penny remains a valuable handcuff in case Carson is injured.
