Reverts to practice squad
White reverted to the Bills' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
Analysis: White was elevated for the Bills' 35-10 win over the 49ers on Sunday, when he served as the emergency third quarterback behind Josh Allen and Mitchell Trubisky. White did not see the field, as neither Allen nor Trubisky suffered injuries that knocked them out of the game.

Elevated for Week 13
The Bills elevated White from their practice squad to their active roster Saturday ahead of Sunday's game against the 49ers.
Analysis: White has been on Buffalo's practice squad since late August and hasn't gotten into a game this season. The veteran quarterback isn't likely to play in Sunday's contest, as both Josh Allen and Mitchell Trubisky are healthy and ahead of him on the depth chart. Per Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic, White's elevation may be a move to reward him for his work on the practice squad throughout the campaign.

Joining Bills' practice squad
White signed with Buffalo's practice squad Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: The Bills will be White's third team affiliation in as many years, but he's staying inside the AFC East. He could be elevated from the practice squad for Week 1 if Mitch Trubisky (knee) is unavailable.

Let go by Miami
The Dolphins released White on Sunday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: White had been competing with Skylar Thompson for the No. 2 quarterback role throughout camp, and the move signals that Thompson has emerged on top in that job battle. The 29-year-old White completed just 20 of 43 pass attempts for 179 yards without a touchdown or interception during the preseason, but he's had enough in-game NFL experience with some success -- specifically in 2021 and 2022 with the Jets -- to be an appealing option for teams needing quarterback depth.

Cap decisions coming in offseason
White completed five of six pass attempts for 74 yards with one touchdown and one interception across six regular-season appearances in 2023. He also rushed eight times for a loss of nine yards.
Analysis: White wasn't called upon to do much as Miami's backup behind Tua Tagovailoa, mostly entering games late in the fourth quarter in contests where the Dolphins were simply running out a large lead. He remains under contract with Miami for the 2024 campaign, but the team has a potential 'out' for only a $1.7 million cap hit, whereas White will otherwise cost a significant $5.2 million against the cap. It wouldn't be surprising to see both sides agree on a restructure in the coming months, if…read more

Mops up in Week 13
White completed his lone pass attempt for three yards while playing the final 13 snaps of the Dolphins' 45-15 win over the Commanders on Sunday.
Analysis: Tua Tagovailoa has started all 12 of the Dolphins' games this season, but White has gotten the chance to take snaps at the end of four contests, all of which were blowout wins. Over his four relief appearances, White has completed three of four attempts for 70 yards, one touchdown and one interception. If Tagovailoa were to miss time at any point, White could make for an intriguing lineup option in leagues that start two quarterbacks while he has access to a Miami offense featuring talented…read more

Makes most of relief snaps
White completed both of his pass attempts for 67 yards and one touchdown during Sunday's 70-20 win over Denver. He also lost one yard on his lone carry.
Analysis: White entered the contest in the fourth quarter in relief of Tua Tagovailoa with the game already well out of hand, and he managed to connect with Robbie Chosen on a 68-yard score after a handful of initial plays were bottled up. It's difficult to take much away from Sunday's blowout win, but White certainly made the most of his first reserve action as a member of the Dolphins. He remains Tagovailoa's top backup heading into a Week 4 matchup at Buffalo.

Earns backup role
White will be the Dolphins' backup quarterback to start the season, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: White securing the No. 2 role was expected but not an absolute lock, given the encouraging body of work fellow signal-caller Skylar Thompson put together in head coach Mike McDaniel's offense as a rookie last season. However, this report officially confirms White will open the season as Tua Tagovailoa's direct backup after joining Miami on a two-year deal this offseason following a pair of campaigns with the division-rival Jets.

Clears concussion protocol
Head coach Mike McDaniel said Sunday that White has cleared concussion protocol, Joe Schad of The Palm Beach Post reports.
Analysis: White landed in concussion protocols following Miami's second preseason game and was sidelined for the finale. His absence has allowed Skylar Thompson to remain in contention for the backup spot behind starter Tua Tagovailoa, as McDaniel noted that he's not ready to announce who'll be the No. 2 QB yet.

Still in protocols
White is still in the league's concussion protocols despite practicing Wednesday, Daniel Oyefusi of the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: White entered protocols Monday and after returning to the field Wednesday, it was believed he had been fully cleared. However, the 28-year-old still hasn't made it through every step of the protocol. Head coach Mike McDaniel has stated White will not play in Saturday's preseason finale against the Jaguars, even if he's been cleared to play.

Back in action
White (concussion) is practicing Wednesday, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com reports.

In concussion protocol
The Dolphins have placed White in the concussion protocol after noticing irregularities in his behavior during Saturday's preseason game against the Texans, Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Miami planned for White to split reps with Skylar Thompson prior to him suffering a concussion, per Joe Schad of The Palm Beach Post. The top backup to Tua Tagovailoa will now be unavailable until he's able to fully clear the league's five-step protocol for brain injuries. As a result, the team plans to re-sign James Blackmon ahead of this weekend's preseason finale versus Jacksonville, Wolfe reports.

Lackluster showing in loss
White completed nine of 14 passes for 85 yards and an interception in Friday's preseason loss to the Falcons.
Analysis: The former Jet got the start for the Dolphins and looked sharp on the opening drive until he got picked off in the red zone. White ended up leading Miami to no points on three first-half drives, but Skylar Thompson struggled just as much after intermission in an eventual 19-3 loss. White is the favorite to claim the No. 2 job behind Tua Tagovailoa after signing a two-year, $8 million deal in the offseason, but his first game action with his new club was unimpressive.

Struggling this spring
White has struggled during spring practices and will need to compete with Skylar Thompson for the second spot on the depth chart, according to Daniel Oyefusi of The Miami Herald.
Analysis: A two-year, $8 million contract makes White the favorite for Miami's backup QB job, but it apparently isn't a sure thing. The catch here is that White is new to coach Mike McDaniel's system, while Thompson had all of last year to learn it. White still has training camp and the preseason ahead of him to prove he's the best option for Miami under center in the event of a Tua Tagovailoa injury.

To sign with Dolphins
White (ribs) agreed to terms with the Dolphins on a two-year contract Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: White gives the Dolphins an experienced backup behind Tua Tagovailoa (concussion) with Teddy Bridgewater a free agent. White, who turns 28 later this month, made seven starts for the Jets over the last two seasons, completing 62.2 percent of his passes at 7.0 yards per attempt with eight touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Inactive for Week 18
White (ribs) is inactive for Sunday's season finale against Miami, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: White aggravated his rib injury -- which reportedly entails five fractures -- in an ugly Week 17 performance at Seattle. Joe Flacco will start the season finale, while White can focus on his recovery as he prepares to hit unrestricted free agency this offseason (unless he re-signs with the Jets first). Zach Wilson will be the team's backup QB in the season finale against Miami.

Not in line to start Sunday
The Jets officially list White (ribs) as questionable for Sunday's game against the Dolphins, but head coach Robert Saleh previously said Friday that the quarterback won't play.
Analysis: Per Rich Cimini of ESPN.com, Joe Flacco is in line to start the Jets' season finale, with Zach Wilson slated to serve as the team's No. 2 quarterback. After practicing fully Wednesday, White was limited in practice on Thursday, and now he's in line to sit out after aggravating his rib injury last Sunday against the Seahawks. White revealed Friday that he's been dealing with five fractured ribs since initially suffering the injury Week 14 in Buffalo.

Dealing with five fractured ribs
White, who won't play in Sunday's game in Miami, revealed Friday that he's been playing through five fractured ribs, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: White was noticeably hampered when he tried to play through the injury in the Week 17 loss to Seattle, even after sitting out the Jets' previous two games. The 27-year-old quarterback will be a free agent at the end of the season, and it's possible the Jets view White as a candidate for the starting job in 2023. He finishes the 2022 season with 1,192 passing yards and a 3:4 TD:INT across four starts.

Ruled out for Week 18
White (ribs) has been ruled out for Sunday's road matchup against the Dolphins, Brian Costello of the New York Post reports.
Analysis: White was initially set to make his second consecutive start to close out the season, but with the team having been eliminated from postseason contention with a Week 17 loss to the Seahawks, the Jets won't take any chances with the banged-up signal-caller in the finale. Limited practice Thursday
White (ribs), who was listed as a full practice participant in Wednesday's walkthrough, was limited during Thursday's session, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: White's status thus is worth monitoring ahead of this weekend's game against the Dolphins, but unless the QB returns to a full practice Friday, he figures to carry an injury designation into the Jets' season finale. Earlier this week, coach Robert Saleh acknowledged that White was dealing with some rib soreness after Week 17 action but added that the signal-caller should be ready for Sunday's contest.

Jets head coach Robert Saleh said White will remain the team's starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Dolphins, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Though he's still tending to a fractured rib, White will begin Week 18 prep Wednesday as a full participant and is on tap for his second straight start, despite the fact that the 7-9 Jets have been eliminated from playoff contention. After sitting out Weeks 15 and 16 due to the rib issue, White returned to the lineup for this past Sunday's 23-6 loss to the Seahawks and struggled to move the offense, completing just 23 of 46 pass attempts for 200 yards and two interceptions while also losing a…read more

Rough performance in loss
White completed 23 of 46 passes for 240 yards with two interceptions and a lost fumble in Sunday's 23-6 loss to the Seahawks.
Analysis: Making his first start since Week 14, White didn't look fully recovered from his rib injury and made a number of awkward throws that were well off the mark, although a Seattle pass rush that sacked him four times was also a factor. With the Jets now eliminated from playoff contention and White having posted a 0:4 TD:INT over his last three games, it's not clear who coach Robert Saleh will name his starting QB for a Week 18 trip to Miami.

Fully healthy for Week 17 start
White (ribs) logged full practices Wednesday and Thursday, and Rich Cimini of ESPN reports that White will start against the Seahawks on Sunday.
Analysis: White had the Jets offense looking as good as it had all year in his three starts, but he missed the last two games due to a fractured rib. After receiving medical clearance Monday, White has been practicing without limitations, and he'll be under center as the Jets try to make a late playoff push. Gets cleared, set for Week 17 start
White (ribs) received medical clearance from doctors and is on track to reclaim starting quarterback duties for the Jets this Sunday at Seattle, Brian Costello of the New York Post reports.
Analysis: After he was unsuccessful in his effort to find a doctor who would allow him to play through the fractured ribs he sustained in the Jets' Dec. 11 loss to the Bills, White missed both of the Jets' last two contests while head coach Robert Saleh turned the offense back over to 2021 No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson. Set to have ribs checked out Monday
White is slated to undergo scans on his injured ribs Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Per Rapoport, the hope that is White -- who is reportedly dealing with fractured ribs -- is cleared for contact ahead of the Jets' Week 17 game against the Seahawks. If so, he'd presumably be in line to start at QB for New York a week from Sunday, but if White isn't cleared by then, Zach Wilson would be a candidate to get the nod versus Seattle.

Limited on practice estimate
White (ribs) was listed as limited on Monday's practice estimate, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: At this stage, White, who is dealing with fractured ribs, still is being evaluated by doctors, which clouds his status in advance of Thursday night's game against the Jaguars. For now, coach Robert Saleh hasn't confirmed the team's starting QB for the contest, but on a short week, White could be hard-pressed to be cleared. If so, Zach Wilson would be in line to draw the assignment Week 16.

Still isn't cleared
Coach Robert Saleh revealed Monday that White (ribs) has yet to be cleared for contact, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports, so White is unlikely to play Thursday against the Jaguars.
Analysis: White is dealing with fractured ribs, so while he feels good enough to play, the medical staff has to wait for the risk of further injury to subside before clearing him. Barring a sudden turnaround, Zach Wilson will be tasked with starting a second consecutive game for the 7-7 Jets, whose playoff hopes hang in the balance.

Out Week 15, re-evaluation coming
White (ribs), who has been ruled out for this Sunday's game against the Lions, is scheduled to be evaluated again Monday, but head coach Robert Saleh acknowledged that it will be a "challenge" for the quarterback to get cleared in time to play in the team's Week 16 game against the Jaguars next Thursday, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: White insisted throughout the week that he would be ready to play this Sunday, but he failed to gain clearance from team doctors and thus will be inactive while Zach Wilson draws the start. With the Jets then facing a quick turnaround for Week 16, White may end up sitting out a second straight game due to the rib injury he suffered in the Week 14 loss to Buffalo.

White (ribs) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Lions, Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The 27-year-old was limited at practice Wednesday and Thursday and planned to play through the rib injury this weekend, but he won't be cleared for contact in time for Sunday, per Adam Schefter of ESPN. Set for limited practice
Head coach Robert Saleh said White (ribs) will be a limited participant in Wednesday's practice, but the Jets are still preparing as though the quarterback will start Sunday's game against the Lions, Andy Vasquez of The Bergen Record reports.
Analysis: Though White exited on two occasions in this past Sunday's 20-12 loss to the Bills due to the rib issue, he proceeded to miss only six snaps on offense and finished the day with 27 completions for 268 yards on 44 pass attempts. Steadies ship in preseason finale
White completed 13 of 17 passes for 170 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 31-27 preseason win over the Giants.
Analysis: White came in after Joe Flacco and before Chris Streveler. He let Braxton Berrios do most of the work on a 21-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, then capped a strong two-minute drill with a 19-yard touchdown to Jeff Smith late in the first half. Outplayed by Streveler
White completed 12 of 17 passes for 90 yards in Monday's 24-16 preseason win over the Falcons. He added one yard on one rushing attempt and didn't record a touchdown or turnover.
Analysis: With the Jets resting a number of notable starters, White got the start surrounded by second-stringers and struggled against Atlanta's first-string defense. The Jets trailed 16-3 when White's night ended one drive into the second quarter, and Chris Streveler led a second-half comeback for the second time in as many weeks. With White struggling and Streveler surging, the former's roster spot could be in jeopardy barring a bounce-back performance in Sunday's preseason finale against the Giants.

Throws 20 balls after Wilson injury
White completed 10 of 20 passes for 98 yards and rushed once for minus-3 yards in Friday's 24-21 preseason win over the Eagles
Analysis: White entered the game after starter Zach Wilson departed due to a knee injury, which is expected to keep Wilson sidelined for 2-to-4 weeks. Chris Streveler threw two touchdowns after replacing White but remains well behind White in New York's quarterback pecking order. Joe Flacco -- who didn't play Friday -- is expected to get the first crack at regular season playing time if Wilson isn't ready to return by Week 1, but White likely would be kept around as the backup in such a scenario. Signs RFA tender
White has signed his restricted free agent tender with the Jets, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Per Cimini, White is slated to earn $2.54 million this coming season. The 26-year-old made four appearances (three starts) for the Jets in 2021, completing 88 of 132 passes for 953 yards, to go along with five touchdowns and eight interceptions. Now that he's back in the fold, White will compete with veteran Joe Flacco for the No. 2 signal-caller job behind Zach Wilson.

Tendered by Jets
The Jets tendered White at his original-round level Wednesday, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: With the move, White is set to make $2.54 million in 2022, unless another team offers him more. In that scenario, New York would have the ability to match any offer, but if they decline, they'd receive a fifth-round pick in return. The Jets also re-signed Joe Flacco to a one-year, $3.5 million deal Wednesday, so they'll have multiple options behind second-year starter Zach Wilson. One scintillating start, three duds
White made four appearances (three starts) in 2021, completing 88 of 132 passes for 953 yards, five touchdowns and eight interceptions.
Analysis: White had never gotten into a regular-season game before the 2021 season, but the 26-year-old quarterback took the league by storm in his first NFL start, throwing for 405 yards and three touchdowns in a Week 8 upset win over the Bengals. Unfortunately for White, he was unable to replicate that success in any of his other outings, quickly putting an end to the brief quarterback controversy for the Jets. Returns from COVID-19 list
New York reinstated White (illness) from the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday, Ethan Greenberg of the Jets' official site reports.
Analysis: White has had one of the lengthier stays on the COVID-19 list of any player over the past two seasons, as he was first deactivated Nov. 23 after testing positive. Just under a month later, White is finally ready to put an end to his five-game absence. Before missing time, White appeared to have fallen behind both Zach Wilson and Joe Flacco on the depth chart at quarterback, so despite his return to full health, the 26-year-old could find himself on the Jets' inactive list Week 16 against…read more

Managing non-COVID illness
Jets head coach Robert Saleh said Wednesday that White is dealing with a non-COVID-19-related illness, Ethan B. Greenberg of the Jets' official site reports.
Analysis: White tested positive for COVID-19 in late November and still resides on the reserve/COVID-19 list, but he's apparently cleared all necessary protocols and has been held up from returning to practice due to an unrelated ailment. Because he hasn't practiced in three weeks, White will likely need to get back on the field by Friday to have a shot at being available Sunday against the Dolphins. Likely out Week 13
White (llness) isn't expected to clear COVID-19 protocols this week, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: White was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list last week after testing positive for the virus, and it's unlikely he returns to the active roster this week. Joe Flacco also was sidelined for Week 12 as a close contact, but he cleared league protocols before being activated Monday.

Tests positive for COVID-19
White was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday after testing positive for the virus, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Joe Flacco also landed on the COVID-19 list as a close contact of White's, and both players will be sidelined for this weekend's matchup with Houston. White served as the backup to Flacco during Sunday's loss to the Dolphins, but rookie Zach Wilson (knee) is now set to reclaim the starting job. Josh Johnson will be promoted from the practice squad to handle backup duties, while White will be unavailable until he clears the health and safety protocols.

Not starting Week 11
White won't start Sunday's game against the Dolphins, as the Jets instead are planning to have Joe Flacco step in at quarterback, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: After throwing for three touchdowns and amassing 405 yards through the air in his first NFL start Week 8 in the Jets' upset win over the Bengals, White had an injury-shortened start against the Colts in Week 9, then returned Week 10 to complete only 24 of 44 pass attempts while tossing four interceptions in a blowout loss to the Bills. White completed 24 of 44 passes for 251 yards and four interceptions in Sunday's 45-17 loss to Buffalo.
Analysis: White was completely overmatched by the ferocious Bills defense, and he was finally pulled from the game after taking a sack on New York's final drive. Joe Flacco came in and proceeded to complete all three of his passes for 47 yards and a touchdown. Could keep starting after Week 10
Jets head coach Robert Saleh implied Wednesday that White's performance in his third start of the season Sunday against the Bills will dictate whether the signal-caller retains the top spot on the depth chart moving forward, Connor Hughes of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: When No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson (knee) succumbed to a PCL sprain in a Week 7 loss to the Patriots, expectations were low for White when he stepped in for his first career start Week 8 against the Bengals. Not only did the Jets spring an upset win in that contest, but White was at the forefront of the thrilling victory, completing 37 of 45 attempts for 405 yards and three touchdowns and two interceptions, both of which came on tipped passes. Trending toward Week 10 start
Head coach Robert Saleh hinted Monday that White (forearm) is likely to make a third straight start in the Jets' Week 10 game against the Bills, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Following a two-week absence, No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson (knee) is expected to resume practicing Wednesday, but Saleh suggested that the rookie signal-caller isn't fully healthy and likely will need an additional week of practice time before reclaiming starting duties for the Jets. Coach cryptic on starter vs. Bills
Coach Robert Saleh wouldn't commit to White (forearm) or Zach Wilson (knee) as his starter for the Jets' Week 10 game against the Bills, though both quarterbacks are expected to resume practicing Monday, Eric Allen of Jets 360 Productions reports.
Analysis: Wilson was the starter while healthy, but White came in for one full game and parts of two others following Wilson's injury and performed at a higher level than the rookie second-overall pick had been able to reach. Ultimately, Saleh's decision could be made easier if one of the quarterbacks ends up needing more time to heal, but at least in White's case, it appears he'll be cleared in time to face the Bills next Sunday after hurting his forearm in the first half of Thursday's loss to the Colts.

Injury likely minor
White (forearm) is expected to return to practice and to be available for the Jets' Week 10 matchup against Buffalo, Ralph Vacchiano of SportsNet New York reports.
Analysis: White suffered the injury during the Jets' first offensive possession of Thursday's loss to the Colts. He was evaluated by the medical staff and was seen attempting throws on the sideline, but he was unable to return after struggling to grip the ball well. However, it sounds as if he avoided serious injury, and he may be healthy enough to be active for the team's next game in 10 days. White proceeded to throw interceptions on both of the next two possessions as Cincinnati built up a 17-7 lead. White is expected to start the Jets' Week 8 game against the Bengals with top quarterback Zack Wilson (knee) likely to miss 2-to-4 weeks after he was diagnosed Monday with a PCL sprain, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: White, who went undrafted out of Western Kentucky in 2018, was summoned off the bench for his first NFL snaps in relief of an injured Wilson in Sunday's 54-13 loss to the Patriots. Though he quickly converted on a three-yard touchdown pass to Corey Davis after Wilson exited the game in the second quarter with the Jets facing a goal-line situation, White largely struggled to guide the offense most of the afternoon, finishing with 20 completions on 32 attempts for 202 yards and two interceptions.…read more

White replaced the injured Zach Wilson (knee) in the second quarter of Sunday's 54-13 loss to the Patriots. He threw for 202 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
Analysis: White entered the game in a 1st-and-goal situation after Wilson got injured, and the backup responded by throwing a three-yard touchdown to Corey Davis on his first NFL pass. It was all downhill from there, however, as White was picked off twice and the Jets fell in blowout fashion. White (ribs) is viewed as the clear favorite to secure the Jets' backup quarterback job as final cuts approach, Brian Costello of the New York Post reports.
Analysis: White's a better short-term option than James Morgan, who's likely ticketed for the practice squad, and the Jets have released Josh Johnson, who didn't get any reps until after White suffered his rib injury. Johnson's release suggests the team is confident in White's health heading into the season, though the possibility of bringing in a more reliable backup option that gets cut by another team can't be ruled out.
