Moved to IR
Whitehead (pectoral) was placed on injured reserve Friday, Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' official site reports.
Analysis: As expected, Whitehead will need to miss at least four games after rupturing his pectoral Sunday against the Giants. There remains a possibility he could return this season, but it could take a Tampa Bay playoff run in order for him to be able to do so. Mike Edwards likely will take over Whitehead's starting strong safety role in the meantime.

Out Sunday, as expected
Whitehead (pectoral) has been ruled out for Sunday's Week 13 matchup against the Panthers.
Analysis: Whitehead ruptured his pectoral last Sunday against the Giants, so there was never a real chance of him suiting up Week 13. Though the veteran safety is expected to be out several weeks, he's not currently slated for surgery, and there's a chance he could return at some point before the end of the campaign. Mike Edwards likely will move into a starting role with Whitehead out of action.

Not ruling out 2024 return
Whitehead does not have surgery scheduled after sustaining a ruptured pectoral during Sunday's game against the Giants, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: It was feared that Whitehead would have to shut his season down after suffering a serious injury in Week 12, but there's a chance he could return this year if Tampa Bay makes a playoff run. In the meantime, his absence could propel Mike Edwards into a starting role at safety.

Season may be over
Whitehead may have suffered a torn pectoral in Sunday's win over the Giants, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Whitehead will undergo an MRI to receive confirmation of the severity, and if that is the diagnosis, it will put an early end to the 27-year-old's season. His absence would certainly be a blow to the team's secondary and thrust the recently acquired Mike Edwards into a starting role.

Done for the day
Whitehead (pectoral) will not return to Sunday's game against the Giants, Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' official site reports.
Analysis: The safety recorded five solo tackles, including a tackle for a loss, before exiting. Whitehead has played on nearly every defensive snap in most of Tampa Bay's games this season. Mike Edwards is his backup.

Career-high 12 tackles vs. Niners
Whitehead finished Sunday's 23-20 loss to the 49ers with 12 tackles (seven solo).
Analysis: Whitehead's 12 tackles Sunday not only led both teams but also surpassed his career-high 11 tackles that he set in Week 2 against the Lions. Through the first 10 games of the regular season, Whitehead has logged 71 tackles (43 solo) and three pass defenses.

Good to go for Week 10
Whitehead (quadriceps) has been cleared to play against the 49ers on Sunday, Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' official site reports.
Analysis: Despite opening the week with back-to-back DNPs, Whitehead gave himself a chance to play Sunday after logging a limited practice session Friday. Despite the quadriceps injury, Whitehead has played through lower-body injuries since early October, so he'll likely see a heavy snap count Sunday. Through the first nine games of the regular season, Whitehead has logged 59 tackles (36 solo) and three pass defenses.

Questionable for Sunday
Whitehead (quadriceps) is listed as questionable ahead of Sunday's matchup against the 49ers.
Analysis: The 27-year-old opened Tampa Bay's week of practice with consecutive DNPs, but he upgraded to a limited session Friday, suggesting he could be trending in the right direction ahead of Sunday. However, if Whitehead can't play through his quadriceps issue in Week 10, expect Kaevon Merriweather to serve as the Buccaneers' top strong safety.

Unavailable for practice Wednesday
Whitehead (quadriceps) did not participate at the Buccaneers' practice Wednesday.
Analysis: Whitehead compiled nine total tackles (five solo) in Monday's 30-24 loss to Kansas City, but he may have left the contest a little worse for wear. The safety will have two more chances to return to practice this week and move past the quadriceps issue ahead of Sunday's matchup with the 49ers.

Strong showing in big win
Whitehead recorded seven tackles (six solo) in the Buccaneers' 51-27 win over the Saints on Sunday.
Analysis: Whitehead had exited the Week 5 loss to the Falcons with a groin injury that also led to limited participation to start Week 6 prep. However, there was nary a trace of the issue in Sunday's big win, with Whitehead logging a 99.0 percent snap share (69 snaps) and finishing second in tackles to Lavonte David. Whitehead (groin) is active for Sunday's game in New Orleans, Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' official site reports.
Analysis: After making an exit in the second half of a Week 5 loss to the Falcons on Thursday Night Football, Whitehead opened Week 6 prep with back-to-back limited practices, but he returned to full participation Friday and went into the weekend listed as questionable. With 10 days between games to get healthy, he'll be out there Sunday in his typical role as the Bucs' starting strong safety, welcoming back free safety Antoine Winfield (foot) for the first time since Week 1. On track to play Week 6
Whitehead (groin) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Saints, but he's considered likely to play, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Though he's carrying a designation into Sunday, Whitehead looks on track to suit up after he was a limited participant in practices Wednesday and Thursday before turning in a full session Friday. Tampa Bay should have both its starting safeties available for the first time since Week 1, as Antoine Winfield (foot) is listed as questionable but is also expected to play after missing the previous four games. Still nursing groin injury
Whitehead (groin) was listed as a limited participant on the Buccaneers' injury report Wednesday.
Analysis: Whitehead suffered a groin injury in Week 4 against the Falcons on Thursday Night Football. His practice participation Thursday and Friday will provide clarity on his status heading into Sunday's game against the Saints. Through the first five games of the regular season, Whitehead has accumulated 36 tackles (24 solo) and three passes defended.

Questionable to return
Whitehead (groin) is questionable to return to Thursday's game against the Falcons, Brianna Dix of the Buccaneers' official site reports.
Analysis: The safety recorded five tackles (four solo) and a pass defensed before leaving the game. Whitehead had 31 tackles (20 solo) and two passes defensed in Tampa Bay's first four games. Kaevon Merriweather is the next man up on the depth chart.

Continues steady start to campaign
Whitehead registered six tackles (five solo) in a 33-16 Week 4 victory over the Eagles on Sunday.
Analysis: Whitehead tied for second on the Buccaneers in stops behind linebacker Lavonte David. Whitehead has recorded at least six tackles in all four of Tampa Bay's contests so far this year, giving him a reliable IDP floor. The safety is coming off a career-best 97 stops last season as a member of the Jets.

Solid tackle output in loss
Whitehead tallied six tackles (three solo) in the Buccaneers' 26-7 loss to the Broncos on Sunday.
Analysis: The veteran safety tied with several teammates for third in tackles on the afternoon for the Buccaneers. Whitehead has played the last two games without Antoine Winfield (foot) alongside him in the defensive backfield, and the former has collected 17 tackles (11 solo) and a defensed pass over that span.

Reaches double-digit tackles
Whitehead recorded 11 tackles (eight solo) and a pass defended in Sunday's 20-16 win over the Lions.
Analysis: Whitehead's 11 combined tackles tied a single-game career high and was just his fourth double-digit tackle game in his seven-year career. He also recorded his first tackle for a loss since Week 7 of the 2023 campaign. Next up for the Pittsburgh product and the Buccaneers defense is a Week 3 matchup with the Broncos.

Makes eight tackles in win
Whitehead recorded eight tackles (four solo) and a pass defensed in the Buccaneers' 37-20 win over the Commanders on Sunday.
Analysis: The safety also helped limit the Commanders to less than 300 yards of total offense. Whitehead spent the first four seasons of his career with Tampa Bay before playing for the Jets for the last two. After finishing 2023 with 97 tackles, nine passes defensed and four interceptions, Whitehead signed a two-year, $9-million deal with the Bucs in the offseason.

Set for Sunday
Whitehead (undisclosed) is good to go this week according to head coach Todd Bowles, Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' official site reports.
Analysis: Whitehead returned to practice last week after missing a significant amount of training camp and not suiting up in a single preseason game due to an undisclosed issue. Despite the extended absence, it appears it's all systems go for the Pittsburgh product, and he should be getting the start at strong safety Sunday against the Commanders.

Gets back on practice field
Whitehead (quadriceps) will resume practicing Tuesday, Greg Auman of Fox Sports reports.
Analysis: Whitehead missed the majority of training camp and all three of Tampa Bay's preseason contests due to a lingering quadriceps injury, so it's encouraging to see him back at practice in at least a limited capacity. The starting safety has just under two weeks remaining to get fully healthy prior to the Buccaneers' regular-season opener against Washington on Sept. 8.

Still sidelined
Whitehead (quadriceps) remains sidelined with a quad injury, Greg Auman of Fox Sports reports.
Analysis: It has been one week since Whitehead sustained the injury at practice. The team has not yet given any sort of timetable for his return. When healthy, the 27-year-old is projected to start next to Antoine Winfield at safety in the Buccaneers' secondary in the upcoming season. While he is sidelined, Rashad Wisdom will presumably get plenty of reps at strong safety.

Misses time with injury
Whitehead is nursing a quadriceps injury Thursday, but he should be back to practice in a couple of days, Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' official site reports.

Back in groove with Winfield
Whitehead, who signed with the Buccaneers this offseason after spending the last two seasons with the Jets, is already working seamlessly with fellow safety Antoine Winfield in training camp, Scott Smith of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Whitehead spent the first four seasons of his career with the Buccaneers before departing for his two-year sojourn in the Big Apple. The veteran safety is coming off a 2023 campaign where he picked off a career-high four passes, and head coach Todd Bowles notes Whitehead returned with improved footwork, deep coverage ability and football IQ. Reunites with Bucs
Whitehead (calf) has agreed to a two-year, $9 million contract with the Buccaneers, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Whitehead spent his first four seasons in Tampa Bay before a two-year stint with the Jets. He didn't miss a game in New York, compiling 186 tackles in 34 appearances. Whitehead exited the 2023 season finale with a calf injury, but he's expected to be healthy once the Buccaneers resume team activities and can be tentatively penciled in as their starting strong safety for 2024.

Three tackles shy of 100 in 2023
Whitehead (calf) finished the 2023 season with 97 tackles (65 solo) and four interceptions among his nine passes defensed.
Analysis: Whitehead picked off Josh Allen three times in Week 1, and while he notched only one interception the rest of the season, the starting strong safety was a key contributor in the Jets' elite secondary. He set new career highs in tackles and passes defensed while appearing in all 17 games, though Whitehead exited the season finale due to a calf injury. Once the calf is healed, Whitehead will likely generate plenty of interest as a free agent, with the Jets among his potential suitors.

Leaves with injury
Whitehead (calf) exited Sunday's game against the Patriots and is doubtful to return, Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Whitehead's early departure will leave the Jets with little depth at safety. In his absence, Ashtyn Davis will likely take over at strong safety. Whitehead recorded no statistics prior to his exit and will finish the 2023 season with 97 tackles, nine pass breakups, four interceptions and one half-sack over 17 appearances.

Whitehead recorded eight tackles (six solo) in Thursday's 37-20 loss at Cleveland.

Whitehead (knee) is active ahead of Sunday's game against the Commanders.
Analysis: After a week of limited practice sessions, Whitehead will play through his knee issue in Week 16. Approaching career high in tackles
Whitehead had eight tackles (four solo) in Sunday's 30-0 loss to the Dolphins.

Nine tackles in Week 11 loss
Whitehead recorded nine tackles (six solo) in Sunday's 32-6 loss to Buffalo.

Gets fourth interception
Whitehead had nine tackles (four solo) and an interception in Sunday's 16-12 loss to the Raiders.
Analysis: Whitehead managed six yards on his interception return. It was his fourth interception of the season. The first three all came against Josh Allen in Week 1, and Whitehead will face Allen's Bills again in Week 11. The starting strong safety also came one tackle shy of his season high in the Week 10 loss.

Whitehead had 10 tackles (nine solo) in Sunday's 15-10 loss to the Patriots.
Analysis: Whitehead tied C.J. Mosley in total tackles on a day where the defense was able to limit Mac Jones and the Patriots' offense to 13 points. Whitehead is now up to 21 tackles in three games and will have his hands full in Week 4 as the Jets welcome Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs on Sunday night.

Picks off Allen thrice
Whitehead recorded three interceptions to go with two tackles (one solo) in Monday's 22-16 overtime win over the Bills.
Analysis: Whitehead didn't have more than two interceptions in any of his first five NFL seasons, but he has already surpassed that total just one game into the 2023 campaign after picking off Josh Allen three times. Known primarily for his tackling, Whitehead could make New York's impressive secondary even more fearsome if his newfound ballhawking continues.

Career-best 89 tackles in 2022
Whitehead totaled a career-high 89 tackles (58 solo) to go with two interceptions and eight passes defensed in 2022.
Analysis: The physical safety played in all 17 games in his first season with the Jets, and he was a key cog in one of the league's stingiest secondaries. Whitehead has one more year left on his contract, so he's expected to reprise the starting strong safety role for Gang Green in 2023.

Analysis: Whitehead notched his best all-around performance of the season, posting his seventh pass defended of 2022 while also eclipsing double-digit tackles for the first time. The starting strong safety is now tied for third on the Jets in passes defended and second in tackles (68), though he still sits far behind cornerback Sauce Gardner (15) and leading tackler C.J. Analysis: Whitehead played 100 percent of the team's defensive snaps Week 2 against the Browns with what is presumably the same injury, as he also logged back-to-back limited practice sessions on both Wednesday and Thursday. Strong postseason-opening effort
Whitehead, who recorded six tackles (all solo), including two for loss, during the Buccaneers 31-15 wild-card win over the Eagles on Sunday, finished the 2021 regular season with 73 tackles (58 solo), two interceptions, eight defensed passes overall and a forced fumble over 14 games.
Analysis: Whitehead did allow a career-high 62.2 percent completion rate when in primary coverage, but he once again put together what would be considered a solid IDP campaign in his fourth season. The 2018 fourth-round pick checked in as the third-leading tackler in the wild-card victory and should play a prominent role in trying to slow down the Rams' potent air attack during Sunday's divisional-round clash.

Stands out again in win
Whitehead recorded seven tackles (six solo), an interception and an additional two defensed passes in the Buccaneers' 32-6 win over the Panthers in Week 16.
Analysis: Whitehead once again stepped up his play in the absence of fellow safety Antoine Winfield (foot) and paced the Buccaneers in tackles on the afternoon. The fourth-year safety also snagged his second pick of the season when he intercepted a late first-quarter Cam Newton pass intended for Tommy Tremble and returned it seven yards to help set up a Ryan Succop field goal. Busy day in return
Whitehead (calf) recorded eight tackles (five solo), including one for loss, in the Buccaneers' 9-0 loss to the Saints on Sunday night.
Analysis: Whitehead was in on each of the defense's 61 snaps during the contest in his return from a two-game absence due to a calf injury. His presence was particularly timely on a night when fellow safety Antoine Winfield (foot) was unable to suit up, and Whitehead now has at least eight stops in four of his last five contests. The 2018 fourth-round pick figures to be busy again in Week 16 against the Panthers on the road.

Whitehead (calf) is active for Sunday night's game against the Saints, Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' official site reports.

Likely to suit up
Whitehead (calf), who is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Saints, is expected to play, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: The Buccaneers will provide confirmation on Whitehead's status one way or the other when the team releases its inactive list 90 minutes prior to the 8:20 p.m. ET kickoff. Over 10 appearances this season, the 24-year-old safety has recorded 49 tackles (39 solo), four pass breakups, one interception and one forced fumble.

Considered questionable for Sunday
Whitehead (calf) is questionable for Sunday against the Saints, Jenna Laine of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Whitehead hasn't played since Week 12 against the Colts when he picked up the injury. After logging a limited practice Wednesday and Thursday, Whitehead was a full participant Friday, which should have him on the right trajectory to play Sunday against the Saints. However, if Whitehead can't play, Andrew Adams will likely be looking at an increased workload.

Ruled out for Week 13
Whitehead (calf) has been ruled out for Sunday's contest against the Falcons, Jenna Laine of ESPN.com reports.

Co-leads team in tackles
Whitehead furnished eight tackles (six solo) in the Buccaneers' 38-31 win over the Colts on Sunday.
Analysis: Whitehead's tackle tally was good enough to colead the team alongside Shaquil Barrett. The 24-year-old has been a solid IDP asset for the last month, posting at least eight tackles in three of the last four games. Any boost to Whitehead's interception numbers -- he has one pick through 10 contests -- would naturally be a welcome bonus, but the 2018 fourth-round pick will continue to hold plenty of value based on tackling numbers alone if he can keep them up.

Season-high nine tackles Sunday
Whitehead produced nine solo tackles and one pass deflection during Sunday's 36-27 loss to the Saints.
Analysis: Whitehead has recorded a pass deflection in three straight games, but his lack of tackles -- 29 through seven appearances -- limits his fantasy upside. Despite his nine-tackle performance Sunday, Whitehead will likely remain a turnover dependant IDP option moving forward. The Buccaneers have a bye in Week 9, but they return to action against Washington, who has 13 turnovers through eight games.

Records first interception of '21
Whitehead posted two solo tackles, including one for loss, and recorded an interception in the Buccaneers' 38-3 win over the Bears on Sunday.
Analysis: The third-year safety snagged a Justin Fields pass intended for Darnell Mooney midway through the third quarter at the Buccaneers' 16-yard line for his first interception of the campaign. Whitehead's tackle numbers have been relatively modest thus far -- his two stops Sunday were a season low -- with the 3.3 stops per game he's averaging putting him on pace to notch a career-low 53 if he plays each of Tampa Bay's remaining 10 games.

Four stops in big win
Whitehead recorded four tackles (all solo) in the Buccaneers' 45-17 win over the Dolphins on Sunday.
Analysis: Whitehead logged 46 snaps overall while recording his second-highest tackle total of the campaign. The fourth-year pro isn't quite matching the caliber of IDP production he mustered during a career-best 2020 season (74 tackles, 2.0 sacks, two INT, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery), but as long as he continues to hold down the starting free safety job, he should have a chance to improve his numbers as the season unfolds.

Will be available Week 2
Whitehead (hamstring) practiced in full Wednesday.
Analysis: Whitehead didn't practice at all before he was ruled out for last Thursday's season opener against the Cowboys. Head coach Bruce Arians told Greg Auman of The Athletic earlier Wednesday that Whitehead "went full speed" at practice, and indeed that has come to pass. The Buccaneers thus will have their starting safety tandem of Whitehead and Antoine Winfield available Sunday versus the Falcons.

Analysis: Whitehead exited the NFC Championship Game early in the third quarter and didn't return. However, it appears the 23-year-old will be able to play through the issue, so he's on track to start at free safety Feb. 7. Prognosis still unclear
Whitehead, who logged five tackles (four solo, including one for loss) and forced a key fumble in Sunday's 31-26 win over the Packers before exiting with a shoulder injury, remains without an official diagnosis for the time being, Jenna Laine of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Whitehead actually sustained his injury courtesy of a tackle on Jamaal Williams, but it was the impressive, fumble-forcing blow he delivered on Aaron Jones early in the third quarter that knocked him out of Sunday's contest for good. The Buccaneers were able to get by the rest of the way against the Packers without both Whitehead and the absent Antoine Winfield (ankle), but they'll need all the reinforcements they can get for a Super Bowl LV matchup versus the Chiefs on Sunday, Feb. 7.

Whitehead (knee) is questionable for Sunday's NFC divisional-round game against the Saints, Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' official site reports.
Analysis: Whitehead was added to the injury report Friday as a limited practice participant. It's always concerning when a player is added so late in the week, so the third-year safety may be trending toward a game-time decision. Season-best tackle tally in loss
Whitehead posted eight tackles (five solo), including two for loss, in the Buccaneers' 38-3 loss to the Saints on Sunday night.
Analysis: The 23-year-old set a new season high in tackles with the performance, one-upping the seven stops he'd posted against the Giants in Week 8. Whitehead is now averaging 5.0 tackles per contest and has also recorded the first two sacks of his career this season, but he is allowing a career-worst 68.8 percent of passes to be completed against him in primary coverage. No injury designation for Week 6
Whitehead (knee) was a limited practice participant Friday and doesn't carry an injury designation into Sunday's game against the Packers, Adam Caplan of Sirius XM Radio reports.
Analysis: Whitehead sandwiched Thursday's missed session between a pair of limited practices, but he apparently showed enough to be kept off the final injury report. Whitehead (knee) didn't participate in Thursday's practice.
Analysis: Whitehead was at least able to practice in a limited capacity Wednesday, so this news is certainly a worrisome sign for his chances to suit up in Week 6. Whitehead (knee) was a limited participant during Wednesday's practice.
Analysis: Whitehead suited up in 100 percent of the team's defensive snaps during Thursday's loss to Chicago, so it's likely that the team is managing his practice reps ahead of Week 6. The Pittsburgh product has been solid this campaign as a starter, recording 26 tackles (18 solo), two sacks and an interception through five games. Productive again in Week 5
Whitehead posted six tackles (two solo), including one for loss, in the Buccaneers' 20-19 loss to the Bears on Thursday night.
Analysis: Whitehead checked in second in tackles for the Bucs on the night and equaled his season high. The 23-year-old had recorded a sack apiece in each of the previous two games, and although that modest streak was snapped Thursday, Whitehead continued to offer solid IDP production for fantasy managers. Whitehead posted four tackles (all solo) and a sack in the Buccaneers' 38-31 win over the Chargers on Sunday.
Analysis: Whitehead was able to get to the quarterback for the second straight week while drawing even with Devin White for the third-most tackles on the afternoon. The third-year safety has been reasonably productive from an IDP standpoint over the first four games with two sacks and an interception in addition to his 20 stops, but he has seen his tackle tally drop in each contest thus far.

Analysis: Whitehead checked in fourth in tackles and recorded his first career sack in the process, a week after he notched an interception of the Panthers' Teddy Bridgewater. The third-year pro is enjoying a strong start to the season overall -- he's posted at least five stops in each contest and is on pace for 85 tackles, which would easily eclipse his rookie-season career high of 76 over 15 games back in 2018.

Team-high tackle tally in win
Whitehead logged nine tackles (six solo), including one for loss, in the Buccaneers' 38-35 win over the Colts on Sunday.
Analysis: Whitehead enjoyed a prolific tackling day in the wild win while playing 63 defensive snaps overall. The second-year safety's tackle total was both a season- and team-high figure, and it marked his seventh game with at least six stops. Whitehead is now eight tackles away from tying his 2018 rookie-season total of 76, putting him firmly in the IDP conversation despite an overall lack of impact plays (one interception, no sacks and no fumbles forced or recovered).

Analysis: The second-year safety turned in his third six-tackle effort over the last four games, and he's now met or exceeded that threshold in six contests overall. Active in Week 10 win
Whitehead recorded six tackles (four solo), including one for loss, in the Buccaneers' 30-27 win over the Cardinals on Sunday.
Analysis: Whitehead now has back-to-back six-tackle tallies, his most productive two-game stretch since Weeks 1 and 2. The second-year safety is on pace to surpass his rookie-season tally of 76 stops, and he's also cut down the completion percentage he's surrendered in primary coverage, whittling last season's 60.6 percent figure to 55.9 percent. Whitehead recorded seven tackles (all solo), including one for loss, and also defended a pass in the Buccaneers' 40-34 overtime loss to the Seahawks.
Analysis: Whitehead finished third on the team in tackles behind linebackers Devin White and Lavonte David, as he had a busy afternoon with Russell Wilson putting up 43 pass attempts. However, Wilson also accumulated 378 passing yards in the contest, so the entire secondary, which lost Carlton Davis to a hip injury in pregame warmups, struggled throughout the afternoon.
