Finds new home
Boyle signed a one-year contract with the Jets on Thursday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.
Analysis: Boyle will reunite with new Jets offensive coordinator Nathanial Hackett, who the signal-caller worked with while both were with Green Bay in 2019 and 2020. The 28-year-old will presumably serve as a backup for his new team, which currently has Zach Wilson and Chris Streveler on the roster at the QB position.

Healthy scratch Sunday
Boyle (coach's decision) is inactive Sunday against the Packers.
Analysis: Boyle will sit this one out with Justin Fields and Trevor Siemian both healthy. His next opportunity to suit up will be Week 15, with the Bears on a bye next week.

Headed to Chicago
The Bears signed Boyle to their active roster from Detroit's practice squad Wednesday ahead of Sunday's game versus Green Bay, Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Analysis: With both Justin Fields (shoulder) and Trevor Siemian (oblique) listed as questionable for Week 13, Chicago saw fit to add Boyle as a short-term insurance policy. There's a shot Boyle could be thrust into a starting role immediately, but as long as one of the aforementioned signal callers is available Sunday, Boyle should fill a reserve role.

Joins Detroit's practice squad
The Lions signed Boyle to their practice squad Monday.
Analysis: Boyle signed with the Lions last year and operated as the primary backup to Jared Goff. He drew three starts over five games and completed 61 of 94 passes for 526 yards with a 3:6 TD:INT ratio during that stretch. The Lions waived David Blough and released Boyle before signing Nate Sudfeld to be the primary backup to Jared Goff to start the 2022 campaign, but Boyle will return to the team as an emergency option on the practice squad.

Dropped by Detroit
Boyle was released by the Lions on Monday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Boyle's tenure in Detroit will come to an end after just one season in a backup role with the team. The 27-year-old signal-caller saw the most significant playing time of his career in 2021, completing 61 of his 94 passes for 526 yards and a 3:6 TD:INT ratio over five games with three starts in place of an injured Jared Goff. However, Boyle appears to have lost out to David Blough for the Lions' No. 2 quarterback spot this preseason, and he will now likely look to land a practice-squad deal…read more

Underwhelming in preseason finale
Boyle completed five of 15 passes for 64 yards with one interception while rushing once for minus-1 yard during Sunday's 19-9 loss to Pittsburgh.
Analysis: Boyle got the start but didn't do much of anything outside of putting together a scoring drive that ended in a field goal. Meanwhile, David Blough put forth a better performance for the second straight week and ended the game with a touchdown to Quintez Cephus. With head coach Dan Campbell wanting to keep just two quarterbacks on the active roster this season, it would be somewhat of a surprise if Boyle survives roster cuts this week.

Set to start Sunday
The Lions announced Thursday that Boyle will be the starting quarterback for the team's preseason finale against the Steelers, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Detroit coach Dan Campbell added Thursday that fellow backup David Blough will also see plenty of playing time against Pittsburgh. Campbell also maintained that the competition for the team's No. 2 quarterback job remains open heading into the Aug. 30 deadline for final cuts. Boyle had an up-and-down performance last time out this preseason against the Falcons (9-of-16 passing, 1:1 TD:INT), so Sunday's matchup will likely serve as his final opportunity to lock up a spot on the Lions' 53-man…read more

Mixed results in preseason opener
Boyle completed nine of 16 passes for 111 yards with one touchdown and one interception during Friday's preseason game against Atlanta.
Analysis: With the Lions looking to keep only two quarterbacks on the active roster this year, per Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, Boyle did not do himself many favors in this one. Not only was he generally outplayed by David Blough, but Boyle threw a bad interception early in the third quarter after airmailing an open receiver downfield in the second. However, Blough's game-losing mental error in the fourth quarter -- in which he fumbled the snap when Detroit could have run out the clock -- may…read more

Sticking with Detroit
The Lions re-signed Boyle to a one-year, $2 million contract Monday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Boyle's contract includes $1.75 million in guaranteed money, with another $500,000 in incentives. The 27-year-old signal-caller started three games for the Lions last season, throwing more interceptions than touchdowns in each contest and only exceeding 200 passing yards once. However, Detroit appears satisfied enough with Boyle's ability to helm the offense under emergency circumstances, and he's now positioned to reprise a familiar role as the No. 2 option behind Jared Goff unless further…read more

Starts three games in 2021
Boyle completed 61 of 94 passes for 526 yards with three touchdowns and six interceptions over five game appearances in 2021. He added 13 rushing yards on two carries.
Analysis: On the surface, Boyle was beyond underwhelming as a fill-in starter during the three games that Jared Goff missed this season. The Eastern Kentucky product threw more picks than touchdowns in each appearance while clearing 200 yards once and averaging 5.6 yards per pass attempt, which would have ranked last among starting QBs if Boyle had attempted enough passes to make the leaderboard. However, Goff only ranked 27th in that category with a 6.6 YPA, and offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn…read more

Likely headed back to bench
Coach Dan Campbell considers Jared Goff (knee) "probable" to return for Week 18 and replace Boyle as the starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Packers, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Boyle started the past two games, with Goff first on the reserve/COVID-19 list and then out with a knee injury. With Goff now listed as questionable but expected to play, Boyle figures to return to his backup role for the season finale.

Could get third straight start
Lions head coach Dan Campbell said Tuesday that he's proceeding as though Boyle will be the team's starting quarterback for Sunday's season finale versus the Packers, but Jared Goff (knee) could reclaim the job if he demonstrates progress in practice this week, Justin Rogers of The Detroit News reports.
Analysis: Boyle made his second and third starts of the season in losses to the Falcons and Seahawks in Weeks 16 and 17, respectively, after Goff missed both games, first due to a positive COVID-19 test and then due to a strained knee. Since Goff wasn't able to practice in any fashion last week on account of the injury, he may need to upgrade to full activity by Friday for the Lions to feel confident enough with his health to reinsert him into the lineup for a largely meaningless Week 18 game. Pads stats in garbage time
Boyle completed 22 of 37 passes for 262 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions during Sunday's 51-29 loss to Seattle. He added 14 rushing yards on one attempt.
Analysis: Boyle didn't do much until Detroit was down 38-7 minutes into the third quarter, which the Eastern Kentucky product had opened with an interception on the first offensive play. While Boyle subsequently was able to pad his stats with a couple of touchdowns to Amon-Ra St. Brown and offensive tackle Taylor Decker, the Lions were never really in the game thanks to a terrible defensive showing that admittedly would be hard for any quarterback to overcome. Getting another spot start
Boyle will start in place of Jared Goff (knee) on Sunday at Seattle, Chris Burke of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: As expected, the Lions included Goff on their Week 17 inactive list, thus giving Boyle another chance to direct the offense. In his first opportunity last Sunday in Atlanta, Boyle completed 24 of 34 passes for 187 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Headed for second straight start
Boyle is expected to receive his second straight start Sunday against the Seahawks after head coach Dan Campbell acknowledged that Jared Goff (knee) is doubtful to be available to play, Justin Rogers of The Detroit News reports.
Analysis: While Goff was on the reserve/COVID-19 list last week after testing positive for the virus, Boyle picked up his second start of the season and of his career. Boyle fared far better last week in the Lions' 20-16 loss to Atlanta than he did in his Detroit debut Week 11 in Cleveland, completing 24 of his first 33 attempts for 187 yards and a touchdown before throwing a game-ending interception at the goal line in the final minute. Returning to No. 2 role
Boyle will reprise his normal duties as the Lions' backup quarterback Week 17 in Seattle after head coach Dan Campbell confirmed Monday that Jared Goff (illness) is due back from the reserve/COVID-19 list after clearing the NFL's return-to-play protocols, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Detroit has yet to officially add Goff back to the 53-man roster, but that transaction is merely a formality now that the signal-caller has been cleared to report back to the Lions' team facility. While Goff was unable to practice this past week before he was deactivated in advance of Sunday's game against the Falcons, Boyle stepped in for his second start of the season. Late pick kills comeback attempt
Boyle completed 24 of 34 passes for 187 yards with one touchdown and one interception during Sunday's 20-16 loss to Atlanta.
Analysis: Boyle performed much better than he did in his first career start Week 11 against Cleveland despite playing without both T.J. Hockenson (finger) and D'Andre Swift (shoulder). However, that's not saying much, and the game ended on a sour note after Boyle blew Detroit's comeback attempt by throwing a pick near Atlanta's goal line in the closing minutes of regulation. Officially starting Sunday
Boyle will start at quarterback in place of Jared Goff (illness) on Sunday in Atlanta, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
Analysis: Goff was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list last Monday and was unable to clear league protocols in time to suit up Week 16. His absence will give Boyle his second NFL start. The first one didn't exactly go swimmingly back in Week 11, when he was 15-for-23 passing for 77 yards and two interceptions in a 13-10 loss at Cleveland. At the very least, Boyle has capable running backs in the stable, with Jamaal Williams and Craig Reynolds on hand to ease the burden (D'Andre Swift again is out with an…read more

On track for Week 16 start
Boyle is in line to start Sunday's game against the Falcons after Lions head coach Dan Campbell said Friday that Jared Goff (illness) is "highly unlikely" to be activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list prior to the contest, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Goff has continued to test positive for COVID-19 since initially contracting the virus Monday, and the Lions aren't confident that he'll either test negative on two consecutive occasions 24 hours apart or show diminished symptoms, which he'll need to do in order to clear the NFL's return-to-play protocol. May not start if Goff sits
Lions head coach Dan Campbell wouldn't commit to Boyle being the team's starting quarterback if Jared Goff (reserve/COVID-19 list) isn't available this Sunday in Atlanta, perhaps suggesting David Blough could be an option as well, Chris Burke of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Goff was placed on the list Monday and still has a chance to return in time for Sunday's game if he's asymptomatic of the virus. If not, the Lions will turn to Boyle or Blough, likely waiting until later in the week to name a starter. Boyle was brutal in his one start this year, throwing for 77 yards with two interceptions in a 13-10 loss to the Browns in Week 11.

Headed for No. 2 role Week 12
Boyle is active as the backup quarterback for Thursday's contest against the Bears behind starter Jared Goff (oblique), who is set to start in his return from a one-game absence, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Though Goff was one of the NFL's least productive starting quarterbacks through the first 10 weeks of the season, he still performed far better than Boyle, who returned from injured reserve last week and picked up his first NFL start while Goff was sidelined with the oblique injury. In Detroit's 13-10 loss to the Browns, Boyle completed 15 of 23 attempts for 77 yards (3.3 YPA), no touchdowns and two interceptions, with most of the Lions' offensive production on the day coming via the ground…read more

Struggles against Browns
Boyle completed 15 of 23 passes for 77 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions in Sunday's 13-10 loss to the Browns.
Analysis: Boyle made his first career NFL start after entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2018. He had attempted only four passes prior to Sunday's game, but he was called upon with Jared Goff (oblique) sidelined. Boyle wasn't asked to do much, as he took to the air only 23 times. Could get two-game run as starter
Boyle (thumb), who is making his first career NFL start Sunday in Cleveland, could remain under center for the Lions' Thanksgiving Day game against the Bears with top quarterback Jared Goff (oblique) uncertain to be available, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Goff is inactive after failing to practice in any capacity this week, allowing Boyle to take all the first-team reps in workouts Wednesday though Friday in preparation for the starting assignment. Not only will Boyle be making his first career start Sunday, but he'll also be making his Lions debut, as he had been on injured reserve since early September following thumb surgery before he was activated Friday. Analysis: Schefter's report confirms something that's become increasingly apparent throughout the week, as top quarterback Jared Goff didn't wind up practicing Wednesday through Friday after hurting his oblique last week against the Steelers and is listed as doubtful for Sunday's contest. The Lions reinstated Boyle (thumb) from injured reserve Friday.
Analysis: The transaction officially restores Boyle to the active roster, while clearing the way for him to make his first career NFL start Sunday against the Browns with Jared Goff (oblique) listed as doubtful for the contest and not expected to be available. The Lions are expected to activate Boyle (thumb) from injured reserve and have him start at quarterback in place of Jared Goff (oblique) in Sunday's game against the Browns, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Detroit has yet to officially rule Goff out for the game, but he looks to be trending toward his first absence of the season after he was listed as a non-participant in each of the team's three practices this week. Will be No. 2 QB when activated
Coach Dan Campbell said Tuesday that Boyle (thumb) will be the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart when he is activated from injured reserve, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Boyle underwent thumb surgery Aug. 30 and has been on injured reserve since the start of the regular season. He was designated to return ahead of Week 10, but he remained inactive, as David Blough operated as the backup to Jared Goff. However, Campbell's comments made it clear that the backup gig is Boyle's when he is officially added to the active roster, which could prove meaningful as Goff is currently battling an oblique injury.

Analysis: Boyle has been on injured reserve since the start of the regular season after he underwent thumb surgery Aug. 30. The Lions placed Boyle (thumb) on injured reserve Thursday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Boyle is expected to miss up to eight weeks due to thumb surgery he underwent in late August, so it's no surprise to see him beginning the regular season on IR. Boyle (thumb) is expected to miss six to eight weeks following thumb surgery, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.

Needs thumb surgery
Boyle needs thumb surgery, and the Lions won't have a timetable for his return until after the procedure, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Boyle may have suffered a serious thumb injury during Friday's preseason loss to the Colts, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports. "We'll know a lot more tomorrow, but we may have to prepare for him to be out for a little bit," coach Dan Campbell said.
Analysis: The Lions brought in Boyle from Green Bay to serve as Jared Goff's backup on a one-year $2.5 million contract. But his time under center during exhibition season has been anything but crisp, combining for 22-for-29 passing (56.4 percent), 135 yards and one touchdown versus no interceptions across three games. Favorite for backup QB role
Boyle is the odds-on favorite to earn the backup quarterback job behind Jared Goff, Benjamin Raven of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: With Chase Daniel no longer on the roster, Boyle and David Blough are the top depth options for Detroit at quarterback. Since Boyle is being paid like a top-10 backup quarterback while Blough is making near the league minimum, it's no surprise that Boyle is considered the favorite for the No. 2 role, especially after the former Green Bay signal-caller drew consistently positive reviews throughout spring workouts.

Inks deal with Detroit
The Lions signed Boyle to a one-year, $2.5 million contract Wednesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: The 26-year-old wasn't tendered a contract by the Packers as a restricted free agent, but he'll remain in the NFC North for 2021. Won't be tendered
The Packers will not tender Boyle, instead allowing him to hit free agency, Nick Shook of NFL.com reports.
Analysis: Boyle is currently a restricted free agent, so Green Bay's decision to let him hit the open market can be interpreted as a sign of the team's confidence in 2020 first-round pick Jordan Love. Unless the Packers bring in another option under center, Love will now be the lone backup to Aaron Rodgers, while Boyle will look to secure a reserve role elsewhere.

He spent the last two seasons in Green Bay, and he could hang onto a roster spot while 2020 first-round pick Jordan Love continues his development.
