Plays 16 snaps vs. Dolphins
Forrest (hamstring) finished Saturday's preseason game against the Dolphins with one tackle while playing 16 snaps (13 on offense, three on special teams).
Analysis: Forrest had been held out of practice since early August after sustaining a hamstring injury. He played in just five regular-season games last year due to a shoulder fracture in October, and his hamstring injury has prevented him from taking valuable reps with the defense. After starting at safety over the last two seasons, Forrest appears to be slated to serve in a backup role behind Jeremy Chinn and Quan Martin.

Not participating in practice
Forrest (hamstring) is at practice Friday but is not participating, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Forrest doesn't appear to be leading the competition to earn the Commanders' starting free-safety spot during training camp, and he's also battling a hamstring problem. The 5-foot-11 safety recorded 29 tackles (13 solo) and zero interceptions in the 2023 season with Washington.

Working with backups
Quan Martin has been getting most of the first-team reps at free safety ahead of Forrest and Percy Butler, Hogs Haven's Jamual Forrest reports.
Analysis: Forrest and Butler both have starting experience, but Martin is an early draft pick (2023 second-rounder) with first-rate athleticism (4.46 40, 44-inch vertical). After mostly defending the slot as a rookie, Martin will move back in the secondary to facilitate rookie second-round pick Mike Sainristil becoming the new nickelback. With Jeremy Chinn expected to start at strong safety, Forrest and Butler look to be the odd men out.

Returns healthy for offseason program
Forrest was healthy for spring practices after suffering a season-ending shoulder fracture in October, Zach Selby of the Commanders' official site reports.
Analysis: Forrest became a starter during the 2022 season and then played 99.1 percent of defensive snaps through Week 5 in 2023. Fellow safety Percy Butler played nearly every snap over the next 10 games following Forrest's injury, recording 57 tackles and six passes defended in that stretch. Forrest seems like the favorite to start in the final season of his rookie contract, but he may spend more time in deep coverage after Washington signed 220-pound Jeremy Chinn to replace Kamren Curl at the other…read more

Continues to make progress
Forrest (shoulder) is expected to be ready for offseason workouts, Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Forrest suffered a fractured shoulder in October, which brought an end to his 2023 campaign early. The Cincinnati product spent about eight weeks with his arm in a sling before beginning rehab at the Commanders' facility and never underwent surgery to repair the injury.

IR-bound with shoulder injury
Washington placed Forrest (shoulder) on its injured reserve list Tuesday, Zach Selby of the Commanders' official site reports.
Analysis: Forrest sustained a fractured shoulder in Week 5 versus Chicago, and he'll now be forced to sit out for at least Washington's next four games as he recovers. In his absence, 2022 fourth-rounder Percy Butler is expected to start at safety next to Kamren Curl.

Suffers shoulder fracture
Forrest suffered a fractured shoulder in Washington's Week 5 loss to the Bears on Thursday night and will be placed on injured reserve, Zach Selby of the Commanders' official site reports.
Analysis: Forrest has started all five games to this point, playing 99 percent of the defensive snaps and registering 29 tackles. It's unclear how long he'll be sidelined. Percy Butler is next up at safety for Washington, but the team figures to make a move at the position with Jeremy Reaves (knee) also headed to injured reserve.

Set to start again
Forrest is listed as a starter on Washington's depth chart.
Analysis: Forrest started 11 of his 17 games last season en route to 84 tackles and four interceptions, including 48 tackles and three picks over the last eight games after becoming an every-down player. He'll likely keep the every-down role, though he does tend to get more of the deep snaps while fellow Washington safety Kamren Curl spends more time up in the box.

Breaks out in 2022
Forrest played in 17 games (11 starts) during the 2022 season and compiled 84 tackles (54 solo), four interceptions and a fumble recovery.
Analysis: Forrest had the best season of his young career as he took over the starting free safety job in the latter half of the season after Bobby McCain started playing cornerback. Forrest, a 2021 fifth-round pick, led the Commanders in interceptions and finished second in tackles while lining up for 81 percent of the defensive snaps. With two years remaining on his rookie contract, Forrest should continue to start for the Commanders next season, a context that puts him on the fantasy radar in IDP…read more

Makes 11 tackles in win
Forrest posted 11 tackles (eight solo) during Sunday's 19-13 win versus the Falcons.
Analysis: Forrest set a new career high in tackles while finishing as the Commanders' leading tackler Week 12. The second-year safety also played every defensive snap for the third game in a row, as previous starting free safety Bobby McCain continued to slot in at cornerback against Atlanta. Forrest has recorded 21 tackles and two interceptions over this span, and he should continue to put up solid production so long as he maintains this starting role moving forward.

Gets starting nod
Forrest will start at safety against the Texans on Sunday, Zach Selby of the Commanders' official site reports.
Analysis: Forrest draws the start, as Bobby McCain has moved to cornerback. The second-year pro should see an uptick in snaps, but he's already been a steady contributor for the Commanders this season. recording 46 tackles (31 solo), five passes defensed, two interceptions and forced fumbles and a fumble recovery in 10 contests.

Double-digit tackes in loss
Forrest registered 10 tackles (eight solo) during Sunday's 36-27 loss to the Lions.
Analysis: Forrest tied Cole Holcomb with a team-high 10 tackles, giving them both 15 tackles across two games. The second-year safety is off to a hot start in his first season as a starter and already has two pass defenses, an interception and a forced fumble to go along with his team-high 15 tackles. He'll look to maintain his strong play against the Eagles in Week 3.

Impressive in Week 1 start
Forrest racked up five tackles (four solo), one forced fumble, one interception and two passes defensed during Sunday's 28-22 win over the Jaguars.
Analysis: Forrest's toe-tapping interception of Trevor Lawrence secured the win for Washington, and his impact in place of starter Kamren Curl (thumb) won't be lost on the team's coaching staff. It's possible that Forrest's standout first career start could lead to more opportunities even when Curl is back in action.

Activated from IR
Forrest (hamstring) was activated from IR by Washington on Tuesday.
Analysis: Forrest was a fifth-round selection by Washington in the 2021 draft and had been on IR since Sept. 3. While Forrest is likely anxious to make his NFL debut, he has some work to do to move up the depth chart behind Landon Collins and Deshazor Everett. With Week 9 being a bye week for Washington, Forrest will have some extra time to try and make his debut in Week 10 against Tampa Bay.

Designated to return from IR
Washington designated Forrest (hamstring) to return from injured reserve Wednesday, Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Forrest will have a 21-day period to be added to the active roster, but if he isn't, he will spend the remainder of the season on injured reserve. When healthy, the rookie fifth-round pick is expected to garner a reserve role behind Landon Collins and Deshazor Everett.

Works out on side field
Forrest (hamstring) worked out with trainers on a side field during Thursday's practice, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: The rookie fifth-round pick is on injured reserve and won't be eligible to return until Week 4 at the earliest, but he's apparently making good progress toward that return date. Once he's cleared, Forrest will likely carve out a role on special teams.
